The next few days go by in a blur. Adrian and I are inseparable; we sit together at every meal, we play with Alexandra together throughout the day, and we sleep together at night. We only sleep, which makes me ache for him even more than usual.
Today, we prepare for Christmas. The big day was tomorrow, which filled everyone in the house with excitement. I sit with Adrian in the drawing room; we read together quietly. "Come with me," he tells me suddenly, pulling me to stand, "I have something to show you." I nod and follow him to the study, where he leads me to a stack of books.
"What are these?" I ask, picking up the one on the top of the stack.
"I've gone through the books here, I think these will help you with the classes you're taking. You can have them all." He smiles. I open the book, seeing there are annotations and notes that color each paragraph.
"Thank you, Adrian. You don't know how much this means to me." I tell him, wrapping my arms around him for a hug.
"It's not much. You're getting your real present tomorrow." He says, kissing me on the forehead.
I gasp. "Are we still going to Diagon Alley today? I haven't got gifts for your family."
"You don't need to get them anything, I've told you." He tells me, shaking his head lightly. I place my hands on his chest before I speak.
"But I do. Come on, can we go now? I need the time to look." I beg. He nods and takes my hand; we go upstairs to grab coats.
Together we go to find Greta and Phelps to apparate to the shops. Once we arrive, Adrian takes my hand and thanks them both; they mention going to get lunch, and we are off on our separate ways. Nothing in the shops seems good enough, and Adrian is close to no help. He only repeats that I don't need to gift them anything, to my chagrin.
A little more than an hour passes, and I only have a set of dolls for Alexandra and a silk scarf for Greta. Each shop is busier than the next, and soon I grow overwhelmed. "You alright, love?" Adrian asks me as I handle a dragon skin bag.
"No." I snap, annoyed by the fact that he was no help.
"Babe." He complains, grabbing the purse out of my hands. "You're worrying too much. They'll love anything you get."
I sigh and rub my forehead. "You don't get it." I tell him. These gifts had to be perfect; in no way could they compare to the generosity of letting me stay at their home, but it was the least I could do.
I decide to buy the bag, and buy a tie and handkerchief for his father. I buy Mr. Phelps a pair of gloves and a new toolbox at the last store on the block, and finally we are almost done... except I still don't have anything to give to Adrian. "You go on and find Greta and Phelps. I need to keep looking, by myself." I tell him.
"Are you cross about what I said earlier?" He asks, his eyebrows furrowing.
I shake my head. "No, I just need to get something alone. I'll meet you back here in thirty minutes, alright? Go on." I kiss his cheek and turn, walking away as quickly as I can towards the shops before he can follow me.
The shops all blur together in my head, and I randomly pick one and enter it. There's some men's clothing in here; perhaps I'd find something suitable. I bump into someone's chest, and apologize quickly before moving to make my way through the store again.
"Mira?" I hear. I look up and see none other than Charlie Weasley.
"Charlie? What are you doing here?" I ask, looking around the shop to see if anyone else I knew was here as well. He grabs my hand and gives it a light squeeze.
