In Honeydukes, I spend almost all of the money in my purse on chocolate frogs and cauldron cakes. By the time I pay for all of my things I'm already a few minutes late to meet with Adrian. Without saying goodbye to anyone, I run down the street to the Three Broomsticks, a happy and warm pub that everyone from school likes to frequent.
My heart skips a beat when I see him. He's sitting down in a booth, wearing a deep green cable knit sweater, playing with his thumbs.
I walk over to him, causally asking "Is this seat taken?"
"All yours" He smiles back. I take the seat across from him and see that he has two butterbeers in front of him. "I went ahead and ordered for us; hope you don't mind."
He hands me a warm drink across the table. I take a small sip and my throat burns. Adrian notices that I wince, and quickly apologizes. Pulling a flask out of his coat, he says with a wink, "I'm so sorry, seems that one's mine"
I giggle, not giving him the glass. He raises his eyebrows, then laughs and spikes the other butterbeer as well.
"Wow, Pucey, spiking butterbeers in the middle of day?" I ask as I take another sip of my drink. He shrugs with a smirk. I continue, "Sorry if I made you wait, I was caught up in the queue at the sweets shop."
"You do like your sweets, don't you? I've noticed you've got a certain liking for," He reaches in his pocket pulling out something with a loud wrapper, "chocolate frogs."
I blush so deeply I can feel my ears get hot. I take the frog from him, whispering a thank you.
"You look beautiful today," He continues, reaching across the table to touch my hair.
A warmth blooms in my stomach, but I am unsure if it's due to the alcohol which is now working into my system or his touch.
"Thank you," I say as I look into his eyes, "You're very flattering." Ugh, really? Flattering? I am such an idiot. Honestly, I don't know what else I could say while he looks at me like this.
He smiles and takes a deep pull from his glass, nonchalantly gulping the burning liquid. I laugh and try to match him. A mistake. It burns my throat on the way down, but whilst I try my best to hide it, I know I give myself away. I instantly feel dizzy; my head feels kilos heavier than it did before. This stuff was strong.
"You sure you can handle that?" He looks at me, wide-eyed. Truth is, I know I can handle my liquor.
"If you knew how many times the twins and I have stolen firewhiskey from their parents, you'd be concerned," I say with a laugh. The realization that I brought up George hits me in my gut. He doesn't notice and laughs along with me.
"This isn't firewhiskey, gorgeous. This is a... much stronger brew," He glances down at my half-drunk glass, "perhaps that's enough."
My cheeks are on fire; my head is already spinning. I see Adrian call for a Slytherin girl sitting at the table next to us. He says something to her, asking for something she understands but I don't. He hands her a few coins, pleading with her. She chastises him and she's gone in an instant, taking both of our glasses with her. She's back in a small moment, handing Adrian something and smiling to me.
"This'll sober you up a bit. Next time, don't get drunk in the middle of the day, or I will tell Madam Rosmerta!" She walks away. I burst into a fit of laughter. The Slytherin girl reminds me so much of Hermione.
Adrian hands me a small cake, the size of my palm, and tells me to eat up. He waits for me to take the first bite before he bites into his. The world remains warm and comfortable, but my vision becomes so much clearer.
"Better?" Adrian asks me. As I look up to meet his gaze I am struck with awe. He is so beautiful. Perfectly in focus as the world around him is blurred.
"I feel amazing" I say. He smiles, the worry leaving his face.
"Why don't we start walking back to the castle before we're tempted by any more drinks?" he asks, standing up swiftly and sticking out his hand. I grab his strong hand and he holds me steady as I exit the booth. I sway for a moment, giggling.
"I'm sorry Adrian, I usually can handle-" I start, but he cuts me off.
"No need to be sorry; it's my fault, honest. Should've told you how strong it was before you decided to keep it" He smiles down at me, arm around my shoulder. I lean my head on him and stumble out of the pub. We begin to walk towards the school, but I stumble on the rocks of the pathway outside of the shops.
"What the hell?" I hear behind me.
"She's alright, Jordan. Just had a bit too much to drink. I'm taking her back to the castle now" Adrian says, defensively.
I giggle, and in a singsong voice call out "Hi Lee!"
Adrian holds me so tight that I can't turn around to see Lee, making sure I don't fall. We begin to walk again when all of a sudden, Lee is right in front of me. He blocks Adrian and I from continuing towards the castle.
"Mason, look at me, are you alright? I can take you to the dormitory if you'd like"
"Lee, I'm okay. You're enjoying your day here! Just check up on me when you all come back, yeah?" I say. I don't want to dampen any of my best friend's fun; we hardly get to come into Hogsmeade.
"We'll be back within the hour" Lee spits, mainly towards Adrian.
I wave goodbye and Adrian and I continue to walk. We somehow make it to the castle, but instead of leading me up the steps towards the Gryffindor tower, Adrian continues to walk straight ahead. We go down to the dungeons, and he leads me to a large stone archway with a circular door.
"The Slytherin dormitory?" I ask, my heart starting to race.
"I'd like to keep an eye on you until your friends come back. I can't exactly go up to your dorm, can I?" He replies. It's true; not only would the other Gryffindors kick him out instantly, but it would be physically impossible for him to come up to my room as the stairs to the girl's beds turn to slides when a boy steps foot on them.
I trust Adrian, so I agree to go with him. He quickly enters his common room, dark and made of stone, and pulls me to a long hallway on the left-hand side. Mentally I feel a lot closer to sober, but my legs are still teetering, and I almost lose my balance once more.
Adrian holds me tightly and doesn't let me fall. We finally reach a tall door and he pushes it open, revealing his bedroom.
