Adrian was surely at the Astronomy Tower by now; it would be a while before he came to find me. My anxiety grows as I begin to think about the latest rumor that circulated the school. Why me? What I had I done to make everyone hate me?
I decide to wait in Adrian's room; he was bound to come here eventually. I walk to the stone door and whisper the password, the word giving me shivers.
Pure-blood. How anciently horrendous of a term. I shake my head and make my way towards his room. I'm able to reach his bed without any students, which brings my nerves down. I sit down quietly, unsure of what to do as I wait for him. His bedside table is unusually messy, especially for him, so I decide to put things in order for him.
I touch my bracelet once more before I begin to tidy his things. I move his books and begin to stack his papers, then one catches my eye. It's a letter from his father. Going against my better judgement, I decide to read what his father had to say.
Son, I already know what your response will be, but I must tell you this anyway. Your girlfriend is beautiful, I will be honest. But she isn't what was expected of you. What about that Vivitra girl, Victoria? Slytherin, pure-blood... more accustomed to our way of life? I want this sorted by your return for summer.
My hands shake with his words. My eyes begin to burn; a lump forms in my throat. I knew it; I knew I wasn't good enough for them. At last, my greatest fear had become a reality. My tears fall on my cheeks and I fold the letter up quickly, forgetting my mission to clean his desk up.
My vision goes blurry as I cry, and I lay myself down on Adrian's bed. His sheets smell like him, but this offers only minimal comfort. I decide to hide myself under his blankets, chills forming on my arms from both the cold of the dungeons and the hatred for what I just read.
I cry gently into his pillow, my head beginning to ache.
—
"My love? Are you alright?" I hear Adrian. My eyes open slowly, finding his face inches from mine.
He pulls me to sit, his hand softy cradling my chin. "Adrian-" I start, but stop almost in the same breath. I can't tell him I found the note. My chest begins to ache.
"What's wrong, pretty girl?" He says quietly.
"I found out why everyone hates me now." I whisper, my eyes burning once more.
He begins to play with the ends of my hair. "We don't have to talk about that."
"Shouldn't we? Since it bothers you so much." I spit.
He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. "That's unfair." He tells me, rubbing his temples.
"People think I slept with Cedric." I say, which makes him pause.
"I know." He whispers, pressing his eyes.
My heart drops. He knew? He shifts his body away from mine. "What do you mean you know?"
"Terrence told me on the train." He says.
"You knew this entire time?" I say angrily. I look away from him as my head begins to throb. I do not cry; I'm too angry. Why had he not told me? Did he think I would never find out?
"I didn't want to upset you." His eyes fall on his desk. He pauses. "Did you move my things?" He asks, his eyes narrowing.
"No." I lie.
"I don't mind if you did, I know I left it a mess. I was in a rush." He stands and begins to finish tidying up the papers, but drops the stack when he sees what I had hastily hidden. "This wasn't folded when I left."
