It's been a day since we've arrived at Hogwarts. Dinner went on as normally as it could here, with the boys and I messing with first years and eating more than we should at the feast. It's seven in the morning, and it's our first day of term. I don't have class until ten, but Katie Bell's snoring makes it impossible to stay in bed.
I dress in a pair of jeans and a scalloped tshirt, brush my hair, and apply just the smallest amount of makeup. I go down the stairs from my dorm to the common room and take a seat on the large couch by the fireplace. Although it's barely autumn and the weather is still warm and comfortable, the fire is lit. I sit, just watching the flames dance.
I sit in my spot by the fire for about twenty minutes before the students who have classes earlier than I do fill the common room, excited for the beginning of the school year. Suddenly, a pair of large hands are on my face, covering my eyes.
"Good morning, you!" Lee Jordan yells. I giggle, pushing his hands off of my face; a group of first years stare at us. He shoos them away and throws himself onto the couch next to me. "Listen here, I have a bone to pick with you. Whatever is going on with George, it's killing him. Killing us. He's become an insufferable git and I do believe it's your fault."
"Piss off Lee, I don't know what you're on about! We're mates- that's it." I reply.
"If you say so," He says as he rolls his eyes, "So tell me about Pucey then." At the mention of his name I gasp. He laughs. "I knew it! The little man-whore is after you, is he?"
"You lot act as if I can't have any friends! We had a thirty-second-long interaction, it was nothing... How'd you even know? Did George rat me out?"
"As I said, he has been insufferable," Lee laughs. "Go on and get changed into your robes. I'll wake the twins and we'll all get breakfast together."
I do as he says and meet the boys back in the common room. George looks at me and smiles, which makes me blush slightly. I take a deep breath and compose myself. I remind myself that I can't let a tiny little crush ruin years of friendship.
While I believe our conversation on the train cleared things up for the both of us about what happened at the Burrow, it also left me questioning my feelings even more.
The boys and I laugh and joke all the way to the Great Hall, which is bustling with hundreds of Hogwarts students. We find a place to sit together at the Gryffindor table, near Ron (who is already shoveling waffles in his mouth) and the infamous Harry Potter.
"Hi Harry! How was your summer?" I ask politely. Harry and I aren't very close, but by being Ron's best friend I had gotten to know him just a bit.
He replies that it was alright and goes into detail of small things that he did. I try to pay attention to every word he says but my attention is pulled elsewhere when I feel a tap on my shoulder. Harry looks up with a scowl. I turn my head and see... Adrian.
"I was hoping to find you here" he says with a small smile.
"Where else would you find her, you dolt?" Fred whispers. Adrian doesn't hear (or just ignores) Fred's comment. Suddenly I am nervous.
"Hi Adrian," I say with a slight blush, "What are you looking for me for?"
"It seems we have our first class together: Divination. I'd love to walk you there."
I hear someone scoff.
I don't know why, but I say, "That would be very nice. I'm just about finished up, are you ready?" He nods and takes my hand. I say a quick goodbye to the table and let myself be led by the dark-haired boy into the hallway.
We walk together in silence for a bit. I clear my throat just as he begins to speak.
"What made you pick Divination for one of your NEWT level classes?" He asks.
"My grandmother was a Seer. The subject interests me, although I honestly am not that great in it." I shrug.
He laughs. "Trust me, from an outside perspective you're great. Beyond great," He looks at me, "and your friends don't take the same interest as you?" The truth is the twins thought Divination was stupid. This was the only class we didn't have together this year, because they had chosen to take Muggle Studies instead.
"I guess not. Why are you taking Divination?" I change the subject away from my friends, away from George.
"I heard you were taking it" He says, locking his eyes with mine.
We're right in front of the door to the astronomy tower, so we stop walking and stand there for a moment. He looks into my eyes, making me blush and turn away.
He probably says this to every girl, every year. What a player. And what an idiot I am for believing it, even for a second. I turn away and open the door, taking a seat in the middle of the classroom. Pucey sits right next to me.
About twenty minutes into class, there's a large bang of the heavy wooden door being thrown open. The whole class turns around to see George Weasley, his cheeks a deep scarlet.
"Sorry I'm late, professor. There was a mess up in my schedule I had to fix."
