Kinda a boring chapter but it fills in some backstory
"Do you think we can trust the witch queen?" I ask Lisa while looking over the piles of paperwork in my new office. "You know how I feel about that bitch but honestly I don't see any other choice" Lisa says while rubbing her face hard.
I rub my temples, I would have much rather snapped Becca's neck but her death would cause too many issues. First and foremost River, he still does not have his memories and even if she does not deserve it he loves her. Second killing her could cause issues within the royal pack and among her allies. The challenge was done per the royals own rules but still, loyalty is hard to break and I don't need any drama.
"Well if the witch queen dares to betray us I can always kill her" Lisa says with a little too much excitement. I laugh but otherwise avoid that topic, the witch queen is Lisa's biological mother and obviously they have issues. "How long do you think it will take to determine which type of spell was used to erase River and Hopes memories?" I ask cautiously. "Ugh hopefully a day or two but seriously some hack did the spell, this is some back ally magic and it's messy" Lisa says sounding extremely annoyed. "You would think as a queen Becca would have used reliable magic, this shit is wonky as hell" Lisa continues ranting. I shoot her a small smile and nod, "I know you will do whatever it takes" I say honestly. "Until then I will just keep River and Hope locked in a room, at least they will be together that should help them both feel more comfortable" I say with a sigh.
Right after I defeated Becca I told the witch queen to punish her as she saw fit but not kill her. I don't know how or if Becca's death will effect River and I don't want to find out, at least not until the bond is broken between them. I can't keep Becca here because she may have loyal pack members who would try to set her free, the witch clan should have no loyalty to her after her pack killed the princess. The plan seems full-proof but the witch queen is definitely a snake. Lisa was cast out of her clan when she was just 7 years old. Apparently the witch queen was frightened by how powerful Lisa was and rather than guide and train her like a real mother would she banished her. It took years for Lisa to finally open up to me about her crappy mother and it breaks my heart that she has to live with that betrayal. The only member of Lisa's family that cared for her was her sister, unfortunately Sam and Becca decided to kill her for crossing the royal border. I know the only reason Lisa has not already killed her mother is because of her sister, her sister never saw the evil within their mother so she loved her.
"After the memory spell is broken we should see about breaking the mate bond between Becca and River" I say absentmindedly as I begin sorting through paperwork. Lisa nods while walking around the office "whoever decorated in here sucks at it" she says looking around in disgust. I can't help but laugh, I have so much work to do I feel myself losing it. The ex royals made a mess of things, pack members are miss treated, families are going hungry, theft and abuse is rampant, I have my work cut out for me.
"How much longer before Hope arrives?" Lisa asks as she continues eyeing the hideous office decor. "She should be here in a few hours. Hopefully once she arrives River will feel a little better, I hate that he thinks I'm going to kill him" I say sadly. "Eh it's to be expected, who knows what Becca said about you after she erased his memories. Becca most likely made you out to be the biggest villain in history" Lisa says chuckling to herself. I can't help but frown at the thought but quickly move on to the next issue. "How are things looking with the pack transfer?" I ask. "The main bulk of our key resources should be here within the next 24 hours. I made sure everyone has their marching orders so things should go smoothly" Lisa says while sitting down hard. "Who would have thought boring would be so much work" Lisa complains while spinning in her chair.
I have key pack members coming to help keep order and get things put together. I have accountants coming to do audits, warriors coming to keep the peace and social workers coming to identify and assist royal pack members that need assistance. After defeating Becca I had some warriors take River and secure him in a room (not the room he shared with Becca...yuck) and then I got to work trying to fix things. It will take months to fix this ass backwards pack, not to mention all the stress I have about my chosen mate. I feel terrible that everyone is feeling so unsure but it will get better over time, one day the royal pack will be a good place for everyone to live, not just high ranking wolves.
After the challenge I made a quick announcement to the royal pack attempting to put everyone at ease but pack wolves grow up hearing stories about how evil rogues are so it's an up hill battle. Becca's mother disappeared at some point and I still have some warriors out looking for her. The ex beta Sam was given to the witch queen along with Becca.
I want nothing more than to wrap my arms around River and snuggle up together but I have to wait, hopefully he feels the same way about me as I do for him, I don't think I could stand it if he hates me. I know the mate bond is strong but after what Becca did to him I can't imagine he can still love her, I just have to get his memories back so he knows the truth.
