I wake up suddenly searching my surroundings for any hint of my current location. I am in a small home, almost a shack that smells a little like chicken. I attempt to move myself off the bed I am laying on but my entire body screams in protest. I let out a pained cry as I lay back down slowly.
Suddenly an old woman rushes in and stares at me looking surprised, "oh thank goodness your awake dear", she says happily. The old woman moves towards the bed and sits on the edge. "Henry come here", she screeches as I flinch at how loud her voice is.
An old man, I am assuming named Henry walks in slowly with the help of a cane. "Welcome back doll", the man says with a small smile on his face.
"Where am I?", I ask, feeling disoriented.
"Oh darling, we are in oil-ridge Alaska", the old woman says, "we found you on the side of the road looking just awful. Honestly we were not sure if you would survive but you kept tellin us not to bring you to the hospital so we tended to you here" she says with sad eyes.
I smile at her, "thank you so much for helping me" I say sincerely. "You must be starving, you have been out for over a week" the woman says while standing and walking to the door. "I will be right back with some food for you darling" she says while walking out the door.
Henry walks closer and sits on the edge of the bed. He places his hand gently on my leg and squeeze slightly, "I'm glad your okay doll", he says with a slight smile. I nod, feeling really worn out.
The woman comes back in with a bowl of delicious smelling soup. "Here darling eat up and then get some rest okay", she says while handing me the bowl.
"Thank you both for everything", I say as I start to eat. Henry and the woman leave me alone to eat and I can hardly finish my food before sleep takes me over.
I slowly stir feeling someone next to me. Looking up I see the same woman from earlier sitting next to me with a bowl of water and a rag. "Just cleaning out your injuries darling" she says calmly as she takes the rag and slowly rubs it along my cuts. My body feels better today but my heart is heavy.
"I don't know how I can ever replay your kindness", I say with a sad smile. The woman looks to me and laughs, "oh darling this is nothin, honestly we owe you for giving us some excitement in our old age". I laugh and shake my head.
"How long have you two lived out here?" I ask. "Oh dear we have been here for 60 years. Henry and I met in college and after getting married we decided to enjoy the simple life", she says smiling as she reminisces. "We raised a small family here, hunting and fishing, but the kids are all grown now with families of their own", she says sadly. "Not much happens in these parts" she continues, "the entire county only has 400 folks, we mostly all just keep to ourselves", she says with a smile.
"That's an interesting way to live", I say thinking about how lonely it must be for them. She laughs, "some folks are built for this kinda life more than others", she kindly explains.
The idea of living such and isolated life seems so foreign to me, considering how I normally live. "So what do you do for fun around here?", I ask trying to make conversation. A bright smile makes its way to her face, "not much other than hunting, fishing and fucking" she says with a wink. My eyes go wide in shock hearing this little old lady talk like that but shock quickly turns to laughter as she and I laugh until we have tears in our eyes.
"Well darlin your wounds are healing real well", she says as she begins to make her way out of the room. "Do you have a plan on where your going once your back on your feet?", she asks.
I smile sadly and nod, "I have a boy I need to get back to" I say with determination. "Oh I bet you do" she says with a wink and I can't help but smirk. "I hope he treats you well", she says sounding like an over protective mother. I nod slowly, "he really is amazing" I say imagining him. "Good for you she chirps, love is hard to find you gotta hold onto tight and fight for it when you find it" she say firmly. I nod in agreement, "I agree, he is one in a million" I say with a smile. "Well get some rest so you can heal up for that man of yours", she says sweetly as she walks out.
I slip off to sleep thinking about my game plan. Warm and comfortable I can't help but hope he is safe.
I wake after a few hours feeling much stronger. I slip out of bed and look out the window to see the sun rising. I make my way into the main house seeing Henry and the woman I still have not asked the name of sitting on the couch. They look over to me with small smiles, "leaving already?", the woman asks. I nod slowly, "thank you so much for everything but I need to get back home", I say sincerely.
Henry walks over and gives me a hug, I eagerly return it and look over to the woman, "thank you both for everything" I say smiling. "Yer welcome darlin" the woman says.
I make my way to the door and turn one last time, "before I go what's your name?", I ask the woman. She smiles wide, "my name is Katie Thomas", she says sweetly. "What's your name darling?" she ask for the first time since I arrive. I smile proudly, "my name is Rose, it was lovely meeting you both". They both give me one more hug before saying, "goodbye Rose, best of luck with that fellow of yours!" I wink to them, "oh trust me I will make my way back to him" I say with determination and fire in my eyes.
