Chapter 50 - Aaron

Francis dabbed a finger on his lips, and a scoff escaped his mouth as its tips got damped in his own blood

"Fine! You're right about me having feelings for her. But no matter how hard I tried, I still couldn't deny it in the end" Aaron's voice quivered, and tears streamed off his cheek as he yelled "But what's the fucking point of admitting it? Would that change the fact that Vien doesn't feel the same way towards me??!"

Their looks of anger slowly shifted into a look of confusion. And once Aaron stopped moving, Eric moved further away and he raised a brow. The two of them didn't understand where he was getting at, so Eric asked "What do you mean Aaron?"

"I mean- how would you assume that without confessing to her in the first place?" Eric continued

Aaron's fists clench, and he looked away. His eyes were red and his cheeks were soaked in tears. It was a mess "It was not an assumption, I saw everything with my own eyes"

"Tell us" Francis calmly responded

His two friends waited patiently, as Aaron cried quietly to himself before finding the strength to reply

"I had everything set, her favourite flowers, her favourite food, and all of it. That rainy night before we left Stohess District, I was planning to confess to her when she went out for a night stroll" The sound of sobbing accompanied his voice, but it was still audible for them to hear

"Lance Corporal was there beside her, he was the man I was jealous of. He was always by Vien's side since day one, and because she always did his papers for him, she had no time left for us. All for Levi"

"But of course he was almost like her boss, I couldn't blame her for anything" Aaron spoke in a low voice, crying "I thought they were nothing more than squad mates, I hoped for at least. But everything went down the drain after all that"

Their eyes widen at his statement, they never knew this was how Aaron felt all these months. There was something way deeper than the lack of courage to confess, and Francis hated himself for not realizing that. He was imprudent

"Stohess District, but that was last year right?" Eric had an appalled look on his face "You mean, you kept it all to yourself since then?"

Francis stuttered, staring at the man with wide eyes "A-aaron-"

"I-I really... thought it was me..."

"I'm incredibly sorry for being too abrupt earlier Aaron, I really had no idea you felt this way all these months" Francis walked closer, holding his shoulder to calm him

Eric stayed on the opposite side, refusing to give up when Aaron was in this state. He smacked him

"And you didn't tell Vien anything after that? You won't confess to her anymore?" Responded Eric hastily

"I see those beautiful sparks in her eyes whenever she looks at Levi. And that alone is enough for me"

"And I have no right to ruin that for them. Which is why I kept it all to myself and tried to deny it, but no matter how hard I try, reality always finds its ways to haunt me"

It was as if he pictured her face in his mind, that a smile formed on his face. His tears dripped on his lips, and the sight of it made Eric look at him like he was some idiot

"Just enough? You'll let her go that easily? But if you love Vien truly, then you shouldn't stop until you have her!" Eric retorted angrily

"Vien's her happiest with Levi, I know it because she doesn't look at me the way I do. And it wretches my heart every second I stayed in their presence. But somehow, when she smiles, I forget all the pain. It's because Vien finally found the happiness she deserves"

Francis gazed at the boy with a light smile. It was obvious that he was selfless when it came to Vien, because the genuineness of his smile exuded itself crystal clear

"Even if it's not because of you? Aaron you shouldn't torment yourself like this!" Exclaimed Eric

Aaron grabbed his crutches, and wiped his tears before opening the door "You should hurry and eat dinner, I'll make sure to catch up"

When he silently left the office, the two medics could only exchange faces of solicitude with each other

Aaron locked the door of his quarters, and slowly brought himself to the bed. When he looked straight, he gazed at his reflection with a small frown of insecureness

Was this the kind of man I expected someone like Vien to love? Funny

He delved inside his bag, looking for a specific piece of parchment. When he took out his notebook, he pulled out a paper inserted between the pages. Once his eyes fell on the familiar handwriting, his lips weakly curved to a smile

It was a letter Moblit gave when he woke up this morning. So he decided to read it before sleeping

AARON !!!!!

How did you get yourself hurt so badly? I was searching for you at the cottage when Moblit told me you met an accident. I hope you're recovering already. I reaaally want to go back to headquarters because I miss the three of you so bad :(

You must be bored laying around all day so let's talk about our days like we usually do before, okay? :D

He muttered, smiling "Sure Vien"

You always make me go first, so I'll do the same thing now. I was hiding something from you for months now because I was embarrassed to say this. But since you're my best friend, I don't think I should feel awkward

I'm in a relationship with Captain Levi!! Hehehe you didn't expect that didn't you? I remember the times we used to complain about his blunt personality. Time flies by fast huh? Seems like only yesterday when we disliked him for calling us brats. I never expected myself to fall for him either, he's cute in so much ways

Now it's your turn! Tell me, is there anyone you like? If there is, tell me her name and I'll help you in any way I can. Although, I doubt that you have someone in mind. I never saw you taking interest in girls yet, so I thought you prioritized work

"Her name?" Aaron chuckled to himself "Not a chance, It's a secret"

Anyways, I'm ending this letter quickly because Levi's already itching to boss the cadets around. But before I do, I want to tell you that I'm really really really super grateful to have you as a best friend

The paper he held onto started to wrinkle, as Aaron found himself clenching onto it tightly. His heart began wretching, and he felt suffocated. It's like he had no right to feel pain over someone else's happiness. After all, that's what he ever wished for in the first place

His mind continued to picture her smile, which caused incredible joy yet torment at the same time. Every breath he took in only made him suffocate more, because the continuous sobs that came didn't pause, not even a second. He felt like he was drowning in his tears
