The Assistant

Part 2

It's been a week since I joined and everybody completed their tests. They weren't necessary but it gave me an excuse to spend time with them all individually, I knew they were all in good shape physically but I had no idea mentally.
Thor didn't like personal questions so always replied with some random one liner or a story about his childhood. At least I knew which one had daddy issues growing up.
Romanoff didn't want to talk about herself, she's a closed book and knowing her past, I can see why.
The others completed the test and I only found a couple things about each of them.

I felt like I had built trust up, I started going on runs with Steve at 6am every morning. I spent a couple hours with Bruce and Tony in the lab whilst I played weird games with Thor.
I would normally cook dinner and talk to Clint and Natasha. They didn't require much from me because they had been used to not needing other people. They had only ever really relied on each other and I had to get them to trust others.

It's mid afternoon when Fury rings me
Y/N- yes sir?
Fury- I need you and three others to accompany a shield shipment tomorrow. Take the Quinjet to location and cars will be supplied for you. 2 in each car. One at the start of the convoy and another at the back
Y/N- understood Sir
Fury- further information has been emailed to you
And with that, he hung up. He was never one for a long chat. I headed to my office and read through the information packet. It seemed a simple mission. There's no chance Tony or Thor would do this so that left 4. I felt it was best to keep Bruce back, he wasn't really the fighter unless big green came out and we don't want that happening.

I round up the three and take them into the meeting room.
Y/N- we've got a mission tomorrow
Steve- We?
Y/N- the 4 of us, we will be accompanying a shield convoy. Steve and Clint in the back car whilst Natasha and I are in the front
Clint- when do we leave?
Y/N- Quinjet takes us to the shipment tomorrow at 8am, we drive with it to the base and then we come home.
Nat- Sounds straightforward
Y/N- here's all the information you need, you are all dismissed.

Nat POV-
It's mission time and Y/N is driving. She studied the route yesterday and I can see she is well prepared in case of emergency.
We've been driving for about an hour and she hasn't spoken much, she was a mystery to me and I needed to know more about her

Nat- you don't talk much
Y/N- I like to listen to people, I've always been better at it
Nat- let's play a game
Y/N- like what?
Nat- I ask you a question and you answer it
Y/N- what if I don't want to?
Nat- you have to
Y/N- well, if you get to ask me things then surely I can ask you as well?
Nat- not today, you've read my file but I don't know anything about you
Y/N- okay fine, bring it on

I was hoping she'd agree to this, there were things about her that I needed to know and others that just intrigued me

Nat- How did you join shield?
Y/N- I was recruited by Fury himself.
Nat- how's that?
Y/N- I was a bad kid, got in trouble all the time and my parents hated me for it. I would get into fights and once, I even blew up the science lab
Nat- no way! Are you serious?
Y/N- I told them it was an accident but I knew what I was doing.
She smiled, that mischievous part of her was still there. She liked having fun and still did but now, she held herself back.

Y/N- Anyway, my parents sent me away to some troubled kids camp and that's where I met Fury. He wanted to recruit young and he found me.
Nat- how young?
Y/N- 16, straight out of school. He trained me and he saved my life and sent me on the right track. Joined the Navy soon after and served there for 7 years. Got my masters whilst I was there and now, I'm here.
Nat- what do you have your masters in? I'm gonna be rude but you don't seem majorly intelligent
Y/N- noted. I've got a masters in psychology, it's why I'm better at listening

How did I not realise? Everything we all say she is analysing and planning on using. I hadn't told her anything personal but she had read my file, she knew everything bad about me but hadn't used it yet
Nat- do you plan on using what we say against us?
Y/N- not at all, I want to help. Anything that you or anyone tells me is in confidence
I felt like she was telling the truth, it wasn't usual for me to trust people this quickly but it felt like she meant it. She knew what she wanted from people and that was her aim.

Nat- Tell me then, why does a 26 year old want to be a babysitter rather than an agent?
Y/N- I've served my whole life and shown what I can do, running teams comes naturally to me. The avengers came together to help people and I want to make sure it stays that way
Nat- you think you can do it?
Y/N- I know I can

There was something about this girl that confused me, she was smart and well trained but yet, this is what she wanted to do?
Nat- any powers?
Y/N- actually yes
Nat- are you being serious?
Y/N- I don't call it a power but Fury does. I can sense danger and feel when something is about to happen. I also have enhanced reactions.
I quickly throw my hand up and she grabs it, I stare at her in shock as she keeps her eyes on the road
Nat- you didn't even blink
Y/N- like I said, I can sense danger.
