The Assistant

Part 40

The building rumbles under your feet, one of the helicarriers crashing into the side.
You take the distraction to disarm Rumlow, the gun sent flying to the side.

Rumlow- you've never been good enough to beat me
Y/N- guess it's time to find out.
Your fist connects with his face, blood flying out of his mouth as his head jars.
He retaliates, fists flying as your block them. Your instincts kicking in, all the training with Natasha was paying off as you continue blocking his attacks.

Sam- the building is coming down, get out.
Nat- we are in the chopper, Y/N where are you?
Y/N- I'm a little busy right now

The onslaught continued, punches flying as you swept his legs from underneath him. A desk moving towards you, the buildings foundations giving way as it tilted to the side.
Rumlow started to roll down as you ran up the building but you couldn't leave him. Throwing down a phone, the telephone cord still attached, he grabbed hold as you started to pull him up.

He was now stood next to you, his fist connects with your face before he sprints down the hallway.
You regain balance and run after him.
Y/N- 41st Floor, be ready!
Fury- I need two minutes
Y/N- I don't have two minutes.

You run towards the windows, gun ready as you fire the bullets, glass shattering.
You don't even hesitate, throwing yourself out the window as the helicopter finds position.
You adjust yourself in the air, falling into the chopper, hand gripping onto a seatbelt as Maria and Sharon grab your hands pulling you to safety.
Y/N- Jesus Nick, I said 41st floor
Fury- it's not like they out the floor numbers on the outside of the building
Y/N- thanks by the way
Maria- I wasn't going to let my best friend die
Y/N- thought you were still angry I forgot your birthday
Maria- of course I am
Y/N- it was 4 years ago!

The helicopter flies away, the helicarriers falling around as Sam watches on from a nearby building.
Fury- is everyone okay back there?
Y/N- I nearly fell out a damn helicopter, no we are not okay back here!
Fury- calm down, you jumped out a building first, suck it up.

Sam- has anyone got eyes on Cap?
Nat- nothing up here
Y/N- take the bird down, I'll search the wreckage
Nat- it's not safe
Y/N- I can be seen here, none of you can.
Nat- fine, be careful.

I grab Sharon's gun and a flare, it could be used in case I found Steve then Sam could be notified to leave the area.
Y/N- get out of here, I know how to find you.
Fury- stay safe agent and thank you
Y/N- I'm just doing my job.

It took a long time to walk from the landing site to where the helicarriers went down, civilians being evacuated after the large scale incident that had just occurred.
Trudging through the woods, the Winter Soldier went the other way. Both raising our guns at each other
Y/N- where is he Bucky?
Buck- embankment
I lowered my gun and ran off, he didn't argue his name so I knew Steve had gotten through to him.

I followed the trail to the embankment, Steve laying battered and bruised on the edge.
Y/N- ah shit
The flare was already loaded as I shot it into the air, the large cloud of red smoke consuming the air above.

I checked his pulse and he was still alive, good. I didn't want to be the one to have to tell Nick Fury his super soldier was dead, that would not go down well.
Y/N- you've got to wake up Steve
I nudge him and there's no response, I had been trained for these circumstances but I didn't have any of the packs so the next best thing would have to do.

I pinch his nose and covered his mouth, suffocation should start to wake him up.
His body fighting as his fist suddenly connected with my nose, a loud crack heard as I fell backwards
Steve- Y/N?
Y/N- yep, that's me
I sit up, blood dripping down my face
Steve- I am so sorry
Y/N- I was suffocating you so I'll let you off this time but we need to get out of here like now

I helped him up, his arm wrapped around my shoulder as we left the location. Getting to the main road, I smash in a car window, hotwiring the car for us
Steve- this is stealing you know?
Y/N- I'm just borrowing, I'll leave it in a safe place.

It had been 3 days since Shield collapsed.
Steve and I had been hiding out at my cabin, Sam was at his house whilst I hadn't heard from the others.
Today, we were all to see each other again. I packed up my bag and waited in the car for Steve, it was a long drive and he was a wanted man so we needed to be discrete.

The journey was quiet, both our priorities in different places. I parked a short walk away, Steve exited first and approached the rendezvous point.
I gave him 8 minutes before stepping out of the car.

Natasha handed him a file as I watched him walk away with Sam.
Fury was stood with his arms crossed, Maria to his left who ushered me to talk to Natasha.

Y/N- hey
Nat- I'm leaving
Y/N- I know
Nat- all my covers have been blown, it's time to start my new life
Y/N- am I part of that?
Nat- maybe in another world, another life, we were meant for a happy ending. But not here, not this time.
Y/N- I understand, take this.
I unclip my necklace, only one ring on it now.
Nat- I can't take this, it means everything to you
Y/N- and you mean everything to me, let it be a symbol of me always being there, able to protect you.

Fury- sorry to break up this heartfelt moment but Shield isn't going to rebuild itself
Maria- let's roll team, I'm driving.
Y/N- I'll see you soon okay?
Nat- yeah

We both walk away, I turn around and she's gone. This was another new chapter of my life and I didn't know what was going to happen.
