Part 37

Nat POV-

I didn't waste any time arriving at the hospital, Fury in surgery as I get there.
The doctors doing everything they can as his heart stops. Time of death was called as tears rolled down my face.

This man had saved my life, he gave me a second chance when I never deserved it and now he was gone. My whole body became numb as Steve walked out the room, Maria following close behind.
I wanted to go after them but my legs wouldn't allow me, I was glued to the spot.

They gave me a chance to say goodbye before pulling the sheet over his head and moving his body. The only person I wanted to talk to was missing and I had no idea how to find her. She was trained to hide for months at a time and she was good at it.
Nat- where is she Maria?
Maria- I don't know
Nat- what do you mean you don't know?
Maria- we left in a separate car going to different destinations, Fury sent her away and told her to hide.
Nat- shit. You weren't doing contracts were you?
She just shakes her head.

I storm out of the hospital and drive back to the compound. Steve needed his space and want back to his apartment.

Steve POV-

I arrive at my place and can hear noise from inside, weird. I open the door and see a lamp on, Y/N sat there waiting for me. She places her finger on her lip signalling for quiet and I nod.
Holding her phone, she shows a few messages.

'The Soldier is coming for you'
'Going off grid'
'Fury wanted you to have this'

She slides a drive over to me and I look at it not knowing what to do. Y/N zips her hoodie up and places her cap back on before leaving.
What the hell even is this? I couldn't do this on my own and only one person could help me with it.

The next morning I head back to the compound and straight to Natasha's room.
Steve- I need your help.
Nat- I'm kinda busy
Steve- Y/N found me last night
Nat- how is she?
Steve- we didn't talk, she just gave me this
Nat- okay?
Steve- I need your help with it.

We go to the local mall to open it, it pings a signal to Hydra and their troops swarm. We managed to make our way out but not without having to create a distraction. She said Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable so she kissed me. It was unexpected but worked, I'm just not ready to deal with the pain Y/N is going to bring down on me.

The flash drive contained information about Hydras latest warrior, the Winter Soldier. We'd been instructed to find him and stop him but I couldn't bring the avengers into this. I had a friend who could help though.
Sam- so let me get this right, you Captain America, need my help?
Steve- yes
Sam- sweet I'm in

We were driving down the highway when the soldier landed on our car, bullets flying through the top as Natasha jumped on my lap shooting back. I grab Sam and push the door off, scrapping itself down the highway. Sparks flying and the paint fragments lay behind us.
The fight went badly, Natasha got shot and we lost the soldier. To make thing worse, we all got arrested.

Sam- we need medical back here, she's not going to make it otherwise
The guard starts to sit up and strikes the opposing guard, knocking them out
Maria- god this thing was squeezing my brain
Steve- good to see you
Maria- and you, who's this?
Steve- new friend
Maria- right well let's get you back to an old friend

Y/N POV-

I stand outside the shield Dam base awaiting the arrival of Maria. She'd requested urgent medical attention so I had them ready waiting next to me.
The van pulled up and the doors open, Steve stepping out first followed by a man helping Natasha

Nat- Y/N?
Y/N- hey
She walks over and wraps her palm around my face, a quick slap as hard as she could. My head turning to the side as I look away from her
Y/N- take her to medical and fix her up.
Nat- I'm fine
Y/N- Agent Romanoff, it's not a statement, it's an order.

I follow them all inside as I approach my desk, Maria making her way over to me
Maria- are you okay?
Y/N- fine.
Maria- are you going to tell me why that happened?
Y/N- nope, I'm going to let her cool off then talk to her
Maria- smart move

It's been a couple hours and she's sat in medbay. I knock before entering, a roll of her eyes shows how she is feeling about me
Nat- what do you want?
Y/N- you've got every right to be angry at me
Nat- YOU THINK? I went looking for you and nobody knew where you were
Y/N- I know, it wasn't fair on you but I had no choice
Nat- you've always got a choice. Just leave before either of us say something we regret
I nod and stand up looking towards the door. I rummage in my pockets and pull out a small box placing it on her table
Y/N- I picked it up before this all happened, it's your if you still want me.

I storm into the main area and push Steve against the wall, my hand wrapped tightly around his throat
Y/N- you were supposed to keep her safe and now she's hurt
Maria- let him go Y/N
Y/N- shut up. You need to realise Steve that not everyone is like you and some people actually need protection
Sam- stand back
Y/N- who the fuck are you?
Sam- Steve's friend, you know big wings fly around
Y/N- great I don't care, back off birdboy.
Steve wasn't fighting back. It took 3 shield agents to get me off him as I was pushed away
Maria- outside now, take a breather and don't come back in until you can do your job.

I threw the door open and the cold air smacked me in the face. I was angry and frustrated, things were good but then I had to start lying.
I grab a nearby stone launching it away trying to get rid of my anger
Nat- what did that stone ever do to you?
Y/N- it was looking at me weirdly.
She walks over and wraps her hand in mine as I keep watching over the water
Nat- talk to me
Y/N- I feel like I've messed everything up. Too many damaging secrets and too many lies. I felt good and things were great, then this whole new problem arose and I was tasked with it but I couldn't tell anyone.
Nat- that's your job
Y/N- my job is to run the avengers, not to get blown up, shot at and then sent here into hiding because I have all the information and superiority to run this place.
Nat- Fury died getting this here
Y/N- oh trust me, he's alive and kicking my ass
Nat- what?
Y/N- you haven't seen him yet?
Nat- No.
Y/N- tell Maria I've cleared you to see him, he's been asking about you

A quick kiss on my cheek as she heads back inside. I wasn't ready to face this yet, I just needed some time to myself.
