The Assistant

Part 3

Y/N POV-
The mission has finished and we were back at the compound. I had to sort all the paperwork out so I was going to my office before Tony stopped me
Tony- party tonight, be there at 8
Y/N- why are we having a party?
Tony- to show how unified the team is
Y/N- as long as no one argues then it's okay with me

I complete all my paperwork and start to get ready, it was smart casual so I decide to wear a tight black jumpsuit and heels, I've got my necklace on as usual. I don't ever take it off unless necessary.
I can hear the party as I walk down the stairs, the room is filled with different people and I knew this could be good for the avengers if we played our cards right.
Y/N- you scrub up well Tony
Tony- looking good yourself Y/N

The party was in full swing and I'd introduced myself to a few people and exchanged pleasantries with people I knew from shield.
Maria- Agent Clarke
Y/N- Agent Hill
People stop to look at us before we both laugh and hug each other
Y/N- it's been too long
Maria- I knew you were here but I didn't realise you'd finished properly in the Navy, never thought we'd see the day you left
Y/N- been out for 4 months now, civilian life wasn't for me so this job helped a lot
Maria- I've heard glowing references from the people here
Y/N- someone's lying to you
I laugh again and walk off to the bar where Nat is stood watching me

Nat- I didn't realise you knew Maria
Y/N- known her for years, I think I met her when I was 18
Nat- some good times together then?
Y/N- yeah, you could say that
I spend the next couple hours talking to Nat, we get interrupted a few times but we brush it off and pick up our conversations from where we left them
Tony- Truth or Dare time!
I offer Nat my hand
Y/N- shall we?

Nat POV-
I take her hand and we join the avengers around the table, I sit on the sofa whilst Y/N sits just in front of me on the floor. Maria sits next to her, it was nice to finally see Y/N for who she was. There wasn't any barriers or work holding her back, this is who she was and I liked it
Tony- Simple rules. Answer the question, complete the dare or pull from the forfeit jar
Rounds pass and the games been fun, we've all too much to drink and it's been a great night

Nat- okay Y/N, truth or dare?
Y/N- Truth
I have a think and decide to ask something personal
Nat- what do the rings on your necklace mean to you? You always wear them
She looks down at the ground as Maria wraps an arm around her
Maria- you don't have to answer
Y/N- it's okay, they deserve to know.
She takes a deep breath
Y/N- I was engaged, it was young love but meant everything to me. I had just got back from deployment and she met me at the airport, we were heading home when we crashed. I survived and she didn't. I was 24 so a couple years ago now
Nat- I'm so sorry, I had no idea
Y/N- It's okay, who's next?

I was an idiot.
I knew it meant something to her but I wasn't expecting that, she was heartbroken and I forced her to talk about it.
I can see she's feeling bad about it so I lean forward and wrap my arms around her. She leans her head into me and looks at me
Y/N- you okay?
Nat- I'm sorry, I didn't know
Y/N- don't apologise, it's just still raw for me
Nat- if you ever need someone to talk to
Y/N- I'll come find you
She kisses my cheek and I let go, falling back into the sofa

The after party finished at 1am. People started to head to bed and Y/N has said goodbye to Maria.
I waited for her and she was surprised to see me
Y/N- you look tired, you should get some rest
Nat- I'm worried about you
Y/N- why's that?
Nat- you've had some tough memories brought up tonight and I wanted to make sure you'd be okay
Y/N- I'll cope but thank you for caring, now go to bed.
I walk upstairs leaving Y/N alone.

Y/N POV-
It's late by the time I've cleaned up and got to bed. I hadn't been sleeping long when there's a knock at my door. I check the time and it's 3:17am
Y/N- come in?
Nat- sorry to wake you but can I stay with you?
Y/N- yeah of course, what's wrong?
Nat- I just don't sleep very well
She gets into bed next me and I wrap my arm around her pulling her close into me.
Her head resting on my shoulder and I can feel my shirt getting wet
Y/N- do you want me to ask what's wrong or pretend not to know?
Nat- please just pretend I'm okay
Y/N- I can do that

I keep her close and eventually she stops crying. I look down and she's asleep, I didn't know what happened but she needed a friend and I was okay with that.
I slowly fell asleep again myself knowing I'd be up in a couple hours for my run with Steve.

It's morning and I wake up, Nat is still asleep so I gently roll her off me and get out of bed. I throw on my running gear and head downstairs
Steve- you ready?
Y/N- I'm tired and slightly hungover, if I don't puke then it's a good achievement
We both just laugh before heading out. I couldn't keep up with Steve but he liked having people with him, the world scared him because he didn't feel a part of it.
I was happy to help him with that.
