The elevator hummed softly as it climbed, tinny speakers breathing out a syrupy ballad from the nineties. Leo leaned back against the rail, eyes half-closed, snapping his fingers off-beat like he was conducting an invisible orchestra. I was mid–air guitar solo when the doors slid open with a reluctant ding. There, framed perfectly by the metal doors, stood Perry. "Dooley! And not Dooely! What are you doing in my elevator?"

"We're enjoying the music." Leo replied smoothly, not missing a beat. "Today is 'love songs from the nineties.' Wanna dance?" he smiled, raising his hands dramatically, letting the question hang silently in the air. "Use the stairs! This is exactly how healthy kids become unhealthy adults." "Really? Are we having this conversation?" I arched an eyebrow so high it practically disappeared into my hairline and gave her a slow once-over as we stepped out.

She rolled her eyes, her expression clearly unimpressed and arranged her blazer in a smug way. "For your information, I'm a speed walker. Perhaps you've seen me at the Mission Creek Mall giving the shoppers a little eye candy." With that, she spun dramatically and strutted off down the hallway like it was a runway. Leo gagged loudly and pretended to throw up, making me pat his back as if he were seriously ill. Honestly, I couldn't blame him.

Her shrill voice suddenly sliced through the chatter of the room. "Listen up, space-fillers!" Everyone groaned but shuffled closer anyway. "This is Emergency Preparedness Week. An emergency drill can happen at any time. So when the alarm sounds, you must evacuate the building in an orderly fashion—like cattle. If cattle had acne... and braces... and a future filling up my gas tank." She made a few snarky comments about how the students looked, burst into laughter at her own jokes, and darted away before anyone could even respond, the students dispersing. "Oh, man! I wish I had Bree's super-speed Because you do not want to be stuck walking behind cows in an emergencytrust me on that!" Adam sighed, shaking his head in exasperation, while Chase looked at him, utterly astonished.

"You would trade your super-strength for Bree's super-speed?" Chase asked, gesturing toward his sister, a scoff escaping his lips. "Man, if I had your strength, I'd just run out of the building juggling those cows." he mimed tossing invisible cattle into the air. "Yeah, and if I had your super-intelligence, I'd have walked away from this conversation thirty seconds ago." Bree gestured toward Chase, smirking, while Leo's eyes lit up—clearly an idea was forming in his mind. "Hey, you know what would be awesome? If you guys took out your bionic chips and switched your abilities!"

"That would be cool." I said, smiling, already imagining them with different abilities. I'd grown used to their powers, so it was interesting to picture how Adam, Bree, and Chase would handle each other's skills. "Why can't we?!" Chase smiled at his siblings, clearly already imagining the possibilities.

"I call your super-smarts!" Bree shouted, pointing dramatically at Chase.

Adam pointed back at her. "I call your super-speed!"
