We were all gathered around Mr. Davenport as he concentrated on fixing his invention, only for it to suddenly shock him, making him drop the screwdriver with a yelp. He snatched it back up and slammed it onto the counter, frustration etched all over his face. "Great! Everything in the lab is officially useless, and I don't have enough money to repair it." "I know my mum didn't marry you for your money, but I haven't been putting with your antics for nothing." Leo said bluntly as Donald sighed deeply, his shoulders slumping in defeat. Bree rose from the couch, Chase followed, and both settled onto stools beside Adam. "Mr. Davenport, take your time with the lab. I don't mind staying up here. Of course, it won't make up for living in a basement for sixteen years, but it's a start."
"We don't have time." Donald said, striding toward the living room, prompting Adam, Bree, and me to swivel on our stools. "Your capsules have regenerative capabilities. They're crucial to your bionic infrastructures." "Huh?" Adam blinked, clearly confused. "Let me help you." Chase sighed, setting down his drink on the counter and elaborated for the child. "Capsule good!" Adam nodded enthusiastically as the pieces clicked together. We turned back to Donald as I shrugged. "I haven't been in my capsule all week, and I feel fine."
"Well, it's only a matter of time before your bionics go haywire." Donald warned. "Oh, I hope they go haywire when I'm taking that history test." I muttered under my breath, earning puzzled looks from everyone. Adam turned to his dad. "Do you know when exactly? Because I have a haircut on Tuesday, and if I glitch in the chair, I'm just gonna end up like that trainwreck." he said, nodding toward Chase's messy haircut. "I get it! I'm short, I look like a lady golfer, and I have a terrible haircut! What else you got?" Chase snapped, clearly fed up with the same teasing. He raised an eyebrow in a challenging way. "How long do you have?"
We all chuckled until Donald interrupted, his voice cutting through the laughter with a serious edge that made us fall silent. "Look, the longer you go without your capsules, the more likely you'll glitch, so don't use your bionics until I can get enough money to rebuild the lab." "Uh-oh, I feel a glitch coming on!" Adam said, punching Chase lightly on the arm. "Ow!" Chase groaned, rubbing his arm. "You know what? I feel one coming on, too!" He grabbed the back of his shirt and threw him off the stool.
"Hey, it's not funny when you hurt me. It's just rude." His glare was sharp, and with that, he stood up abruptly and stormed out of the room, leaving an awkward silence in his wake.
It was pretty funny to me.
...
Adam and Bree shared the red chair while I lounged on the couch, scrolling through my phone. Just then, Donald strode over, Tasha trailing behind him, and Leo came down the stairs, making his way toward me alongside Chase. "Okay everybody, family meeting time."
.Adam immediately raised his hand, wanting to ask a question. "Adam, you don't have to raise to hand to speak, just talk."
"Oh, I've got nothing to say, I'm just airing out my pits." Adam grinned, waving the air under his arms in our direction before raising his other hand, seemingly proud to air out his pits. Donald cleared his throat. "The reason I called this family meeting is because we have to make some cutbacks in the family budget, starting with... losing our cellphones."
