Today we weren't in the lab, but instead lounging in the living room, relaxing. I was sprawled on the couch, engrossed in a mobile game, killing time until Bree got home so we could go get our nails done, while Big D sat cross-legged with his tablet, fiddling with something, likely way too complicated for my interest. Tasha was supposed to join us, but work had called her away. Crazy, right? As for my brothers, they were... somewhere in the world.
A few minutes later, the front door opened, and in walked Bree, exchanging smiles as she shut the door behind her. "Tasha, I'm home! You ready to go?" she called out, entering the house. Donald looked up from his tablet and answered for her. "Hey, she got called away for work. But anything you have planned with her, you can do with me." He jabbed his thumb into his chest with enthusiasm. "We were getting a mani-pedi." I said, raising a brow. "Perfect! This mani is ready for his pedi!" He pointed to himself, lifting one leg and wiggling his toes.
"On second thought, I'm good." Bree started backing toward the kitchen. "Oh, c'mon, Bree!" I groaned, hating the fact she cancelled our plans just because our dad wanted to join in. "Nope. No. No." Donald said, springing up from the couch and grabbed Bree's elbow, gently but firmly steering her toward the sofa. Man, he was determined. "You, you, and I—" he said, pointing at each of us dramatically. "—are going to be spending some quality father-daughters time." He plopped her down next to him.
Before we could protest, he slipped into full teenage mode. "So, who are you totes crushing on? Is he adorbs?" "What?" Bree and I exclaimed in unison, sharing a bewildered look. Before Donald could elaborate, a loud thump sounded against the front door. Moments later, the door burst open to reveal the culprit: our lovely principal, Perry. "Why do you bother knocking if you're just gonna barge in?" Donald asked, standing up as Bree and I followed suit.
"I wasn't knocking. I dislocated my shoulder body-checking someone and I was cramming it back into place." Perry explained nonchalantly and slammed her shoulder again against the doorframe, eliciting a loud crack. "Oh yeah." she sighed with satisfaction and went to crack her shoulder one final time, causing us to exchange weird looks. "Bingo! Love that meaty pop!" She laughed, clearly delighted.
"You never fail to astonish us, do you, Perry?" I asked, crossing my arms and giving her a once-over. "Yeah, can we get a heads-up the next time you decide to cram something back into its socket?" Bree added, clearly grossed out. Perry ignored us completely, her focus zeroed in on Donald. "Anywho—" she strode toward him eagerly. "—the Mission Creek Country Club is accepting new members, and I need your help."
"You? Need our help?" I gasped, pulling out my phone. "Oh my God, say it one more time. I have to record this. Leo will never believe me." My mistake was holding the phone too close, as Perry immediately lunged forward, pretending to spit on it. I jerked back with a disgusted look, clutching my phone to my chest.
"Anywho..." Bree interjected, mocking her previous words and cutting off her antics. "Why do you want to join a country club?" Bree asked, causing me to nod in agreement, also curious. "Because. My summer's wide open and I'm tired of all the wolf-whistles I get dipping my piglets into the public pool. I need to be ogled by fancy people." She explained the latter in a weird voice while wiggling her hands. As Bree walked away to put her bag down, Perry turned to him, awaiting for an answer only to find him zoning out. "I'm sorry, after the word 'piglet' I retreated into my safe place."
