We found ourselves stowed away on a cargo ship, crouched behind a towering stack of crates. We'd been wedged there for what felt like an eternity, and every muscle in my body ached—especially my butt, which had long since gone numb. We waited in silence, holding our breath as a group of workers milled around nearby. Finally, when the coast was clear, we emerged from our hiding spots with stiff limbs and groans of relief.
"Well, after the last six hours, I can confidently say that there is no ladylike way to sit on an anchor." Bree muttered, wincing as she stretched her legs out and Chase stretched his back. I stretched too, letting out a long groan as every joint screamed in protest. "That was the worst six hours of my life." I grumbled. "What are you complaining about?" Chase shot back, plucking a long white feather from his tangled hair. "A seagull tried to turn my head into a nest."
"Where are we even headed?" The worry had been building in my chest, and now it pushed its way into my voice.
"No idea. I can't pinpoint our coordinates without our GPS locators."
"I bet we're going to Acapulco. It's where all the cruise ships go." Adam chimed in, earning a round of confused stares. "Adam." Bree said slowly, like she was talking to a child. "We're not on a cruise ship. Its a cargo freighter."
He shrugged with a grin. "Whatever it is, we're on vacation. Okay? I'm making the most out of it." "This is not a vacation." I snapped, my patience fraying. "We're hiding from the FBI."
"And if they find us—" Chase jumped in, his voice tight with urgency as Adam sat in a pile of giant ropes. "—we'll become government guinea pigs and Mr. Davenport will go to jail."
"Yeah! For once in your life, think, Adam—think!" I shouted, the stress finally boiling over. My voice echoed louder than I intended, and Bree immediately punched me in the arm in warning. Right. We weren't alone on this ship. Adam didn't flinch. Unbothered, he plopped down in a coiled heap of thick rope, slipped on his sunglasses, and made himself comfortable.
"Oh, will you relax?" he said, completely unphased. "It's nice to get away every once in a while, isn't it?" He lifted his sunglasses briefly to smirk at us. "And where is that waiter?"
That was it. I lunged at him, hands outstretched, but Chase and Bree grabbed me just in time, dragging me back before I could throttle him.
...
We found a spot near the back of the deck and settled onto a row of crates, trying to stay out of sight. Adam, Bree, and I sat in silence, listening for any signs of movement while we waited for Chase to return. He'd gone to scout ahead and make sure no one else was heading our way. A few minutes later, Chase jogged back over, slightly out of breath but grinning. "Okay, we're all clear. The crew just went to eat."
He dropped onto a crate beside us, and almost immediately, Adam slid his sunglasses off with exaggerated drama and shot him a deadpan glare. "If it's veal shank, I'm giving us up." he said, standing up as if ready to march into the mess hall right then and there. "Adam!" Bree hissed, grabbing his arm and yanking him back down as I groaned, holding my stomach. "Man, I would kill for some food right now."
