Bree, Caitlin, and I were sitting on the couch, each of us slumped into our own corners like we'd collectively given up on the concept of productivity for the day. Nothing was really going on, everyone relaxed, however, Caitlin, unlike the rest of us, was not relaxed at all. She kept looking around the room in sharp, alert movements, like she was expecting something—or someone—to suddenly appear out of nowhere.
"Caitlin, this is so boring. Wouldn't you rather go to a movie?"
"No."
"Yogurt shop?"
"No."
"Ice-cream shop?"
"No."
" Buy matching pink cars and race across the country?"
"No."
"Okay, Caitlin, what is going on with you? All you ever want to do is hang out in my living room." Bree finally asked, sitting up a little straighter on the couch. Caitlin hesitated, suddenly a lot less confident than she'd been a second ago. She looked between all of us like she was weighing whether to actually say it out loud. "I guess I should tell you." she admitted. "The reason I always want to hang at your house is because... I kind of have a crush on Adam."
I immediately choked. My drink went everywhere. "Adam who?!" I blurted, wiping my mouth as Bree spoke up in shock as well. "Wait—wait—my brother Adam?"
"Yeah, please tell me—Adam, as in Adam Parker?" I asked slowly, narrowing my eyes at Caitlin. Her silence answered for her. I physically recoiled, can't imagining them together. "Ew, Caitlin, no." Bree said immediately, cringing like she could scrub the thought out of her brain. Caitlin just shrugged, completely unbothered. "Why not? Compared to my last two boyfriends, he's an upgrade. For starters, he's real."
That made me pause for a second because, unfortunately, I felt that.
Bree looked like she was one more sentence away from needing emotional recovery time. "Okay, first off, Adam's not here and second, this whole thing is weirding me out. Let's just go to the mall." she declared, standing up decisively. That sounded like the first normal suggestion anyone had made all day. Caitlin immediately stood up too, suddenly way too invested in the idea. "Will Adam be there?" she asked.
We all turned to look at her weirdly, but Caitlin just blinked back at us like she hadn't said anything remotely concerning. "I'm joking." she added quickly, then paused. "Sort of."
Another pause.
"I'm not."
"Just wait right here. I'm gonna get my new jacket. Back in a sec." she informed and then—before I could even blink—she super-speeded out of the room in a blur of motion. I just sat there for a second, staring at the empty space where she used to be.
Slowly, I turned back to Caitlin.
"So...." I said, clearing my throat like that would somehow reset reality. "Ice-cream shop?" I was actively trying to redirect the entire universe away from whatever just happened but before Caitlin could even respond, the front door opened and Adam walked in.
