"So... this is where we'll be hiding out from the FBI." Mr. Davenport muttered, stepping inside the dimly lit space. "What do you think?" We followed Mr. Davenport into what I guessed was supposed to be a safehouse, though "safe" felt like a generous term.

Bree wrinkled her nose and glanced around at the rusted pipes, peeling paint, and ominous cobwebs. "I think we should update our tetanus shots." she said dryly. Her gaze flicked around again. "Hey, where's Leo? I thought you said he'd be here."

I gave Mr. Davenport a questioning look, but he only smirked. "Yeah, I kind of lied about that." Before I could respond, he reached behind his neck, pressed a hidden button, and his face shimmered—morphing into someone else's entirely. My stomach dropped. It was Douglas. He chuckled at our stunned expressions. "Guess who?"

"Whoa! Awesome mask, Mr. Davenport! He looks just like his evil brother who captured us." Adam said with his usual lack of situational awareness as Douglas's eyes narrowed at his stupidity. "Adam, maybe Mr. Davenport really is a witch!" I gasped mockingly, which of course made Adam gasp for real.

Bree didn't miss a beat, bringing us back to the situation at hand. "That is his evil brother." "And he did just capture us." Chase added matter-of-factly. "Oh!" Adam nodded as if this cleared up everything. "Good one."

"I did not see that coming." I muttered, still trying to process the face-swap reveal. Douglas only shrugged in that smug I'm awesome kind of way. "I don't get it." Chase said, narrowing his eyes. "I thought you were an ice cube in Mr. Davenport's warehouse. How did you get out?" Chase asked the million-dollar question. "I had a little help." Douglas's smirk deepened as the trio's eyes immediately darted toward me.

"Wh—guys, seriously?!" I sputtered, taking a step back. "It wasn't me!" Douglas chuckled at the accusation, finding it amusing. I shot him my best death glare, forcing the spotlight back onto him. "It doesn't matter." Chase said firmly. "We'll destroy this rat trap just like your last one."

"Yeah, thanks for that." Douglas replied, stepping forward with exaggerated offense. "I didn't even have time to back up my music. Twenty years of up-tempo jazz, gone!" He gestured dramatically before leaning back on a stack of dusty crates. "Oh, because your music taste is so great." I shot back, remembering the torturous playlist he'd subjected us to the last time he captured us. The others ignored me, glaring at him instead, as Chase's voice echoed. "Yeah? Well, I know something else that's about to be gone." "Yeah." Adam nodded, missing the threat entirely. "Let's get his reggae too."

"Get him!"

That's when a figure stepped out from the shadows, wearing a stark white mask that caught the dim light. My stomach knotted. Before I could even process who—or what—it was, Douglas barked. "Now!"

A sudden jolt of pain ripped through every nerve in my body. My knees buckled, vision tunneling into black. The last thing I felt was the cold concrete rushing up to meet me before everything went dark.

...

"Wakey-wakey. Eggs and bac-y." Douglas's voice sing-songed through the fog in my head, pulling me back from the haze. My eyes fluttered open to find him looming over us. I smiled hopefully at him in defiance, but the second he caught my expression, he tilted his head. "Actually, it's just an expression." he clarified, killing my smile instantly. "All we have to eat around here are nuts, berries and... the occasional barbequed iguana."

"Taunting us with non-existent breakfast foods? You really are evil!" Adam said, as we all tried our best to stand up on our shaky legs. "But I will take that barbecued iguana."
