We were all in the lab doing homework, the room lit by the soft glow of screens and scattered desk lamps. Adam sat at the table with a large bowl of noodles, slurping loudly between bites, while the rest of us tried to focus on our work. A fly suddenly buzzed through the air, circling Bree's head in small, irritating loops. She paused mid-sentence, her eyes tracking it sharply before snapping her hand up to swat it away. The fly darted just out of reach.
"What is that?" she demanded, twisting in her chair and swatting again, more aggressively this time. Chase barely looked up from his work. "Bree, relax. It's just a fly." She shot him a look, then gestured broadly toward Adam without hesitation. "Well, why is it bothering me when the foul, ripe stench of Adam is right there?" Adam paused mid-noodle, shrugged casually, and lifted the bowl slightly. "Lucky undies." he said matter-of-factly. "Nine days in a row, and no lightning strikes—that's science." Bree groaned and swatted at the fly again as it looped past her shoulder. The door to the lab slid open and Leo walked in laughing to himself, clearly amused by something we hadn't seen yet. "You look ridiculous." "Well, yeah, so would you if you had some flying thing attacking you." Without warning, he tapped his watch. A faint electronic buzz filled the air—and just like that, the fly stopped mid-air. The fly slowly drifted down and landed calmly on Leo's outstretched hand.
He looked at Bree with a satisfied smirk. "Would I?" "How'd you do that?" Chase asked immediately, straightening in his seat. Leo lifted his chin slightly, holding his hand steady as the fly remained perched on his finger. "I talk to insects." he replied casually. "They call me the fly whisperer." I leaned back in my chair, smirking. "Yeah." I muttered just loud enough. "In third grade they also called you the love whisperer." Leo shot me an immediate glare, his head snapping toward me while the others burst into laughter, thinking about the memory.
Adam suddenly stood up so fast his chair squeaked. "You can talk to flies?" he asked, leaning forward excitedly. "Ask him why bees are such jerks." Chase, now more focused, stepped closer and quickly reached into Leo's bag. He pulled out a small capsule device and held it up under the lab lights. "Guys, Leo's messing with you." he said, turning it slightly in his hands. "That's Mr. Davenport's spy fly. He designed it for recon missions. The fly's head is a tiny camera. Leo's controlling the whole thing with a trackball on this watch." He grabbed Leo's wrist and gently shook it, exposing the watch interface. Leo yanked his arm back, glaring. "Is there anything you don't ruin?"
Chase smiled innocently, glad to have been proven right once again. "Nope and Leo, I don't think Mr. Davenport would approve of you using his expensive gadgets as toys."
Leo immediately snatched the capsule back. "Well then he shouldn't have gone to Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp." he shot back. He popped the capsule open, holding it up. "Hello! You're almost forty! You can't rock, and you're no one's fantasy."
Bree reached out for it but he pulled it back instantly. "Can I see it?" "Back off, handsy. It needs to charge in its fly hive." He carefully placed the fly back inside the capsule, closing it with a soft click. "I used it all night."
