"Welcome to your new home Mrs. Davenport." Big D said warmly as he stepped through the front door. Cradled in his arms, Tasha laughed softly as he carried her bridal-style across the threshold. "Why, thank you, Mr. Davenport." she replied, her smile bright and affectionate. "Absolutely, Mrs. Davenport." Big D answered, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her lips.
Meanwhile, Leo and I were struggling under the weight of cardboard boxes and suitcases, hauling our lives into this massive house. Dad wanted a fresh start—new wife, new family.
"We get it." Leo deadpanned as he dropped a box with a thud. "You got married." "Yeah." I added, rolling my eyes as I set down another suitcase. "It's getting old." Once the bags were piled by the door, curiosity kicked in. We ditched our luggage and the boy immediately began exploring. "Whoa!" he blurted, spinning in a slow circle. "You bought this huge place just from inventing things?!" Leo questioned, his eyes just as wide. Big D nodded proudly. "That's right." \
Now that he'd finally let someone into his life, it would be nice not having the house all to myself anymore. At least... I hoped it would be.
"Way to go, Mom!" Leo grinned. "Now that's a husband." I could already tell he was thrilled—mostly because he'd soon be sticking his hands into gadgets he absolutely should not be touching. He'd been reminding me all day that his middle name was Danger. Still, I couldn't deny it—the house was incredible, and a spark of excitement flickered in my chest. My attention drifted to the living room, where a sleek, futuristic screen dominated the wall. "Uh... what is that?" he asked, pointing, furrowing his brows.
Big D grinned at the question. He kept telling me he was drying for someone to ask. "Meet Davenport Industries' first fully interactive 3D TV." He pressed a button, and the screen flickered to life. In an instant, a baseball stadium appeared—so real it felt like we were standing on the field. I barely had time to react before a ball came flying straight toward us. Leo yelped and lunged, slamming into the wall as he tried to catch it. What seemed to be a digital face popped up on the screen, scowling. "Watch the face, termite!" snapped the digital face, his name being Eddy. Let's just say we have very interesting interactions.
"Uh-oh, I think the little voice inside my head is back." I giggled at Leo's stunned expression, but he shot me a glare, which I cheerfully ignored. Davenport quickly clarified, clearing his throat. "Eddy, this is my new stepson, Leo. Remember—I told you Leo and Tasha were moving in today." Eddy's response was blunt with no hesitation whatsoever. "Everything here is mine." "Oh, I'll show you what's yours." I muttered under my breath, already irritated by him. "Oh no." Leo stated, moving quickly, grabbing my arms before I could start something.
"Dawn—why don't you help Leo check out his new room?" Dad said smoothly. "Go straight down the hall. When you see the room with the video games, action figures, and the fifty-foot TV..." He paused, clearly enjoying himself as Leo practically vibrated with excitement. "...keep going. That one's mine."
Leo's shoulders slumped, his expression downhearted, and I patted his back gently, knowing how my dad can be. "Come on." I said, forcing some cheer into my voice as I grabbed his arm and dragged him off in a random direction. "This place is massive." he muttered, awe creeping into his tone despite himself. "Yeah." I laughed, glancing around at the endless halls. "I think you're gonna need a GPS just to find the bathroom."
We both froze. A narrow seam appeared in the wall, panels sliding apart with a soft mechanical hum. Leo and I slowly turned to each other, eyes wide, the familiar spark of curiosity flaring between us. "Well... that's not suspicious at all." I whispered. Without another word, we stepped inside.
The door sealed shut behind us. Suddenly, the floor vanished.
The elevator dropped at lightning speed, our stomachs lurching as gravity yanked us downward. We screamed in unison, clutching onto each other as the walls blurred past, plunging us straight into whatever awaited us below.
