We were in the lab—Chase going through his school book like a man on a mission, and Adam perched on top of the console, sniffing his shoe.

"Ugh! Smells like something died in here." Adam groaned, holding it closer. His eyes went wide as he peered inside. "Whoa! Something did die in here! Guys, look at this!" He leaned the object toward Chase's face, who immediately scrunched in disgust. "No!" Chase and I said in unison, me not wanting to even try.

"Well, at least tell me if this is fur or mold." Adam whined, pressing the shoe even closer. Chase groaned again, glaring, flipping the page. "No!" Adam gave up and tried to shove the shoe back on, but it ripped, leaving his foot poking through the hole. "Adam, what did you do to your shoe?" I asked, arms crossed, moving closer. "I guess I don't know my own strength." he shrugged and stood, grinning sheepishly. "The same thing happened yesterday with my underwear. Oh! That reminds me, I got you a new headband for gym class." He whipped out an elastic waistband from his pants and plopped it on his head but Chase ripped it off aggressively, while I stifled a laugh.

Chase sighed, walking over to the glass table to pack his books. "Man, Mr. Davenport warned us about this. As we get older, our chips have to be re-calibrated to adjust for our growth." "Oh, well, then yours will never have to be adjusted. 'Cause your body doesn't grow, get it?" His amused smile faded when Chase didn't react. "I'm saying you're small."

"I get it!" Chase snapped, grabbing more books from the bench as I fetched my backpack. "When Mr. Davenport gets back, he can re-calibrate your super strength. Toss me my backpack." Adam hurled it a little too enthusiastically, and it sailed through the doors. "Or we could do it now." I quirked an eyebrow at Chase, who nodded frantically. Books were set down, and I placed my bag on the table.

"Quick, get in your capsule," I instructed, motioning toward the sleek pod. "Ah, but I like being ridiculously strong. I'm like King Kong without the little lady in his hand." Adam whined dramatically, as Chase shot him a sharp, frustrated glare, putting his hands in his pockets. I couldn't help but laugh at the ridiculous sight, Adam holding out his hand like a theatrical challenge. "Go ahead, Chase, jump in."

"Go!" I pointed firmly at Adam's capsule, glancing at Chase. He shook his head at Adam's statement, his expression a perfect mix of exasperation and reluctant resignation. Despite himself, he gave a long-suffering sigh and stepped forward, conceding to the absurdity of it all. "Fine."

We strode over to the console as Adam went inside the capsule. "All right." I began, fingers dancing over the controls, "Let's see... Adam's size parameters: six-one, one seventy-five pounds..."

"Make it a hundred and eighty. Had a big breakfast." Adam said, patting his belly with a smug grin, clearly proud of his supposed gains. I took over the console for a moment to adjust his weight, and Chase's eyes narrowed into a sharp glare at me. I simply shrugged innocently, as if nothing had happened. "Since your strength has intensified, I'm dialing it back from an 8 to a 6." Chase explained, fingers hovering over the controls.
