"Wait, what? Who is he?"
Meg's words were heard, but they rushed off of South like water.
"South? Hey, South? You okay? Who is that?"
There seemed to be a roar creeping up in her ears.
"Magnum Ealand. Responds to Maine. My...boyfriend," she choked out, eyes springing with tears.
"Oh my god. Lindsay, call up to Pediatrics and tell Nathan Drew to get down here now. Ashley, you stay here. I'm going to go to the operating room. South...hey, you can still hear me right?" Meg said, eyes shifting from person to person.
"Just go! I'll collect myself and then I'll be there," she snapped, walking toward the empty hallway.
She knew Ashley wouldn't be far behind, obviously sent to "watch" her. North would be down there soon and she really didn't want him telling her everything would be okay, because it wouldn't. She needed to get into the operating room to help Free, but she knew she'd be more of a burden than help. Meg was as good as she was, Free would be able to use her well.
But could they save him?
Sure, she never advertised their relationship. Everyone in their friends group knew, but she wasn't about to go around kissing him every five seconds. She found those couples to be annoying. And their practices were especially annoying. Like saying "I love you" every three seconds.
What if she never hears that again?
"South!"
North ran down the hallway, face displaying his concern very bluntly.
"Lindsay told me what happened and, god, I'm so sorry," he said, out of breath. "But everything will be okay."
"No, North it won't! You can say that it will because whether or not he lives, whether or not he dies, you still get out of this damage-free. Sure, he's your friend and all, but you'd rather have York or Wash in a heartbeat. And you'd be worried about me for a while, but I give it a year before you'd tell me to get over it, to let him go and go on with life. You don't care what you say because he doesn't matter to you!" she shouted, voice not as strong and clearly wobbling a bit.
North wrapped his arms around his twin and held her while the first few tears slipped out of her eyes.
"Why?! Why him?! Why couldn't anyone else take his place?!" she sobbed, hitting her brother's chest with her palm.
North didn't give her an answer, mainly because there wasn't one he could think of that wouldn't make her more upset. While she cried, he slowly slid down the wall until they were both sitting on the floor, South more or less laying on her taller twin. For once, North couldn't think of anything to say that would make her feel better, that would make her stop crying. Stroking her hair, he sighed and tried to concentrate on something else, anything else.
But South kept wondering if the one she loved was already gone.
