At the end of her shift, South was ready to cry. The past few days hadn't gotten any better; everything was still Meg-centered. Maine was getting stronger and stronger; he'd most likely be out of the hospital soon. Good, right?
Right?
Sighing and biting her lip, she rode the elevator upstairs to his floor again. Upon entry to his room, she saw that he had a whiteboard and a marker. Obviously a gift from the nurses for communication. For once, she wanted to thank them.
"Hello," she greeted with a wave, sitting in her usual chair.
After a brief minute, she got a reply.
Did you have a good day? You look upset... :(
She swallowed back her emotions and plastered on a fake smile.
"Of course, Maine. Why wouldn't I be?"
You're lying
"No, I'm not. I'm fine."
Sadie, you're ready to burst into tears. What happened? Or, if you don't wanna say, just cry and get it over with. I can't check on you at home and I know you hate it when North does it...
"Why would he care?! He has that new girl to watch now," she said angrily, one hot tear slipping out of her eye.
He's only trying to help...it's what he does...Now I'm trying to help you...
South turned her head toward the window. The glittering lights distracted her for a moment. They took her far away, away from the conversation, away from life in general. She just wanted to be okay. But...Maine had said she was fine, so why was he being so contradicting all of the sudden?
"You said I was fine," she growled. "So why do I need help?"
A reply was neither heard, nor written. She could see the gears turning in his head, trying to figure out how to say what he was thinking. She wouldn't get mad. He'd already told her the truth; she was fine, nothing was wrong with her.
A small part in the back of her head whispered lies. It said he was lying. But for all she knew, she was going just a tad bit crazy. Maine would never lie to her. He knew how it made her feel. Used, worthless and pathetic for not catching it.
Tap Tap
She looked back with a fake smile, showing her attention. He hesitated turning his board to her. Then, when he did, her smile fell and her heart dropped into her stomach.
Two little, simple words were written in shaky writing.
I lied
