I had been staying with the avengers for nearly 2 weeks now, but it almost felt like I'd been here all along. If I wasn't working I was hanging out with at least one member of the team. It was really interesting to see everyone open up and act how they normally would act if I wasn't here.
Well almost everyone, Steve still was acting closed off. Whenever we were both in the room he'd find an excuse to leave, or his attention was elsewhere. He'd look at me with little expression, jaw clenched, almost pained. I was starting to think this was just what he was like, he was a soldier after all so maybe he wasn't someone who turned that off.
I couldn't help but think he didn't like me though, there had been a few times where I'd be just about to walk into a room and I could hear him laughing or joking along with the team but as soon as I would walk in he'd switch back to the captain I knew. Which was so annoying because I had nothing to write about, nothing good anyway. Plus whenever I would hear him laugh it would always make me smile slightly because it was such as nice, warm laugh.
I was sat in the common room with Nat "what's the deal with steve?" I ask her out of the blue.
She raises a brow at me in question "what do you mean? Like do you mean if he single? Or his work our regime? Or what? Do you like him" she smirks glancing over mischievously.
"what no that's not what I meant, I mean why is he so closed off?" I ask her trying not to feel flustered.
"so you like him?" she smirks noticing I hadn't said otherwise.
"well I don't know because I don't know him!" I complain throwing my hands up.
She chuckles to herself shaking her head slightly "give him time, it takes him a while to open up and get comfortable" she reassures me.
"did it take this long for you guys?" I ask her.
She thinks for a moment before answering "uh no not really, but the first time we all met was when New York was under attack so we had that, but it wasn't easy there was loads of teething issues don't get me wrong" she explains.
"really? What went wrong?" I ask her confused.
"well specifics wise don't say anything in your report thing, but there's a lot of strong willed people here with different backgrounds so people disagreed over what we should do. Like me and Clint are trained assassins so are generally a bit more cold blooded, steve is very much a team player and wants to plan everything out perfectly, tony acts first thinks later, so we were bound to have issues we still do" she admits.
I nod my head in understanding it made a lot of sense. I got the feeling this entire group were like a dysfunctional family. JARVIS then called asking for nat to go to the briefing room.
As she got up she paused before leaving "plus he's from the 40s he gets flustered really easily, he's still that little skinny kid who was too scared to talk to ladies" she says leaving before I had a chance to ask what she meant.
Why would him being flustered be a problem, surely he didn't like me like that. I was pretty sure he didn't like me full stop, from the very moment we met I could tell he didn't like me. I knew he didn't like the fact I was living here, or writing this article. Him being flustered around me couldn't be it, there was no way.

It had been a lonely couple days in the tower, the team had been gone for a mission so there was no one around leaving me to my own devices for a couple days. I had been working through all the material I had so far, I was getting pretty close to having everything I needed all I needed was something for steve. All I had was what other teammates had said about him, I could call it quits and just use that but, people's opinion of someone was never who they truly were.
"JARVIS are you able to tell me anything about steve?" I ask leaning back in my chair.
"I can pull up some online articles about him?" JARVIS offers.
I sigh slumping my shoulders in defeat, trying to think of ways to get him to open up. I see the jet fly past my window and decide to head up to see what the team were like directly post mission.
When I get there the door of the jet was just opening and I could see Clint and thor helping nat out of the jet, she had a nasty looking cut on her leg. Bruce and Tony followed them out and headed quickly inside, Bruce with a blanket around him and tony fiddling with his battered helmet.
Soon the only people left in the hanger were me and steve, I could just about see him moving around the jet still but from what I could see he wasn't moving as normally as he would.
When he finally steps out of the jet he carried his shield in one hand and a few packs in the other, I could see the discomfort on his face as he limped off the jet, with a bloody patch on his side.
My jaw dropped as I saw him and I rushed over to try and help "here let me take something" I offer trying to reach for a pack.
He pulls the pack away wincing as he does so "I'm fine" he grumbles.
"steve stop being a hero and let me help" I tell him sternly.
He pauses for a moment before sighing in defeat passing me a couple of the packs, "let me know if they're too heavy" he tells me as we start walking out of the hanger.
"I'm not the one who's injured, you should probably get that check out" I say nodding to his injury.
He shakes his head slightly, trying and failing to hold back a groan "no it's fine, I heal quickly anyway, serum and all that" he says as he puts his shield and packs down in the kit room.
"well that's handy" I say putting the packs down next to him.
"yeah would have been helpful back in the 40s would have been beaten up a lot less" he mumbles taking his helmet off and running his hand through his hair.
"you got beaten up a lot?" I ask him surprised he'd even told me that in the first place.
He looks down nervously "uh yeah, was a little kid that stood up to the bigger man, the bigger man didn't always like that" he said with a small chuckle but groans clutching his side.
"can I have a look? I know some first aid" I ask him cautiously.
He studies me for a moment "if it makes you feel better I guess" he grumbled lifting up the side of his suit so I could see his cut. It wasn't pretty to say the least but I could see what he meant by healing quickly.
"the cut looks a little dirty, I would suggest getting it cleaned up and stitched so you don't scar" I say gently running my hand over the cut.
I look back up at steve and see him looking down at me jaw clenched "I'm sure its fine" he states before pulling his suit back down and quickly walking out leaving me stood there alone wondering why he's behaviour changed so quickly.
