Warnings: Angst, Jealousy

Walking into the compound kitchen you spot Steve sat there staring into the distance. His chin was resting in his hand as he rubbed his fingers over his lips. Clearly deep in thought.

"Penny for your thoughts?" You say walking in grabbing a glass from the cupboard.

"Hm?" He hums glancing up at you.

"Why you brooding like an angsty teen?" You ask you hear him chuckle quietly to himself as you fill up your glass.

"Oh um it's nothing I just-" he sighs stopping when you turn back round to face him.

He furrows his brows, pursing his lips a sad look in his eyes as he shook his head looking down.

"Everything alright with you and Sharon?" You ask him.

You knew things hadn't been great recently they argued more often. Whenever Steve returned from seeing her he didn't look like he'd just gotten back from a date. It looked like he just returned from a boring old meeting.

"Um we got in another fight today" Steve admits with a deep sigh.

"Oh, you wanna talk about it? What happened?" You ask leaning up against the counter.

"She um- she saw that you texted me and flipped out" steve explains making you furrow your brows in confusion.

You had only texted him about an upcoming mission. Purely work based nothing else.

"Was she upset that you're going away on a mission?" You ask.

"No, she was mad because it was you that texted" he explains shrugging his shoulders slightly.

"What? that's ridiculous!" You exclaim laughing slightly at the thought of it.

"Yeah my thoughts exactly, but for whatever reason she just doesn't like our friendship" steve sighs.

You furrow you brows in annoyance. You were fiercely protective of your friends and it didn't matter who it was if someone was making them upset or angry. You felt the need to step in.

"Have you told her that it's just a friendship nothing more" you ask him crossing your arms over your chest.

"Yeah I've tried but it's not really sinking in" Steve tells you making you shake your head.

"Look Steve, I know it's probably not my place because she's your girlfriend or whatever but first and foremost you're my best friend" you start getting Steve to look back up at you.

"What she's doing it's honestly a little toxic, she can't dictate who you can and can't be friends with based on her own insecurities. If you've tried to put her mind at ease and she still has an issue it just says she doesn't trust you and that's a major problem" you tell him taking a deep breath to control your anger.

Steve just silently nods his head taking in everything you just told him.

"Yeah. I mean she suggested that I find my own place, guess that would be a good comprised" Steve sighs shrugging his shoulders.

"No Steve that's not a compromise. That's a sacrifice! One that once you start will give her leverage to demand more. What's next you can't train with me, go on missions with me? Before you know it she'll have cut us out of each others lives" you exclaim getting visibly agitated.

Steve stands up from his seat walking the short distance towards you before wrapping his arms around you in a tight hug. You breath out a deep sigh of relief. You always felt safe in Steve's arms, relaxed. Knowing you could lose him was heart-breaking.
