Warnings: none really, tad of cheating.

If it's all in my head tell me now
Tell me I've got it wrong somehow
I know my love should be celebrated
But you tolerate it

It had been a couple months since that night you and steve met for the very first time. You could set a clock by the texts you and steve sent each other, so regularly it was like clockwork. He had very quickly become a close confident. You felt it so easy to talk with him about pretty much anything.

Sometimes you felt like you husband didn't seem to care or even listen to what you talked about. Saying that what you complain about was what everyone else in the business dealt with and therefore it wasn't something to really to complain about.

But with steve you never felt like he was rushing you to finish your stories or finding the perfect in so he could talk about what he wanted. He would sit there and nod along seemingly incredibly interested, he either was or just an incredibly good actor. Having a friend like steve around was incredibly helpful especially when your husband went away for work.

He had been away for a week now, whenever you spoke on the phone to him he sounded very stressed, apparently this deal they were trying to sort out wasn't going the way they wanted. You had decided to surprise him when he got home, to try and cheer him up after a long week. You had taken the afternoon off so that you could prepare everything you needed, you had cleaned the house top to bottom until it was so clean you could eat off the floors. You'd lit candles so the entire place smelt amazing and calming, you'd even put up a welcome home banner. You spent hours slaving over the oven making his favourite meal, you couldn't wait to see the look on his face.

Once it was all ready you had changed in to an outfit that you knew he loved, once you were ready you heard your phone ring. Smiling to yourself when you saw Steve's name flash across the screen.

"Hey" you smiled.

"hey how's your day been, did that meeting go the way you wanted?" steve asked making you instantly warm inside.

You had told him about the meeting this morning as a throw away comment, it was with a dreary old man and you knew it was drag on unnecessarily.

"Yeah it was good, didn't drag on too much thankfully since I wanted to leave on time" you laugh walking towards the living room smiling to yourself.

"oh yeah your husband comes home today doesn't he" steve said, you could hear a hint of displeasure in his voice but decided to ignore it.

"yeah he's not had a good trip so I thought I'd surprise him when he gets home, I've cooked his favourite meal, cleaned the house made it all nice, I've even dressed up a little" you tell him looking down at your outfit smoothing it out "I guess you could say I've used my best colours for his portrait" you chuckle half-heartedly.

"yes you have, he better appreciate it he's the luckiest man on earth" steve sighed a smile clearly present in his voice.

"well I don't know about that" you sighed shaking you head slightly.

"hey don't do that, you're an amazing woman, and an amazing wife, any man would be lucky to be yours" steve says instantly interrupting the noise in your head replacing it with a warm feeling.

"thank you steve, you'll make a woman very happy one day, I'm very jealous of whoever she may be" you tell him.

"I best go he'll probably be home soon" you sigh hesitant to hang up the phone.

"of course I'll see you soon" steve smiles.

You sat down on the couch and waited for your husband to return home.
