Warnings: Angst in the beginning followed by some fluff
When Steve moved in across the hall from you, you recognised him instantly. But for that reason you kept any greetings pleasant and short. The last couple years had been difficult for the Avengers. While the anger following the snap had died down in the last 2 years, you could see he still felt guilty.
However one day while you were checking for mail when you saw him walk in head low. His shoulders were hunched as if he was trying to make himself smaller. He ran his hand through his hair with a deep and shaky sigh. It didn't take a genius to work out he had a bad day. When he glanced up and saw you he gave you a weak smile and small wave before heading up the stairs.
When you got back into your own apartment you sighed to yourself. You hated seeing him down, despite the fact you hadn't had a conversation longer than 5 minutes before. You hated that he had the weight of the world on his shoulders, and a world who didn't care that he'd done everything to stop Thanos. That he'd lost too. You wanted to do something to help but you had no clue what to do. When the timer for your oven pinged and idea popped into your head.
So a few moments later you found yourself stood outside Steve's apartment knocking on his door. When he opened the door you could see his confused expression.
"(Y/N), Hi are you okay?" He asks.
"Yeah, I just was in a baking mood today and made this pie and I know I won't eat it all myself so I thought I'd offer you some" you tell him with a smile, holding the pie up in your hands
His expression changes from one of confusion to shock and surprise. His mouth opening and shutting for a moment before he stepped aside.
"Yeah sounds great, um come on in" he says stuttering slightly.
He couldn't believe you were here right now. When he first met you he felt like he'd fallen into a wormhole back to the 40s as he couldn't find his words. You were one of the few people who didn't send glares his way, or talk in hushed tones around him. You'd smile, greet him and ask how he was. You never failed to bring a smile to his face despite barely knowing you.
"Do you have something I can put your share in?" You asked as you walked into the kitchen.
"Uh yeah, if you want I have some ice cream in the freezer, we could have a slice now?" Steve asks rubbing his hands together nervously.
You smile over at him warmly "yeah that sounds great"
Steve quickly moves grabbing some bowls out of the cupboard passing them to you. He then grabs the ice cream from freezer as you start to serve up the pie. As he turns back around he smiles when he spots exactly what kind of pie it was.
"Oh apple pie, my favourite" he smiles putting the tub of ice cream down.
"Oh really? Mine too, I know it seems a bit basic but I love it" you smile shrugging your shoulders.
"Sometimes simplicity is key, why bother trying to make something more interesting when it's already perfect" Steve says as he scoops out some ice cream.
"I wouldn't say perfect, especially since you haven't tried it yet, this might be the worse apple pie you've ever had" you chuckle.
"I doubt that, shall we?" Steve smiles passing you a fork.
You smile taking the fork from him and following him to the couch. He turns the TV on for some background noise as the both of you tuck into the pie. As Steve took his first bite he smiled to himself. This was easily one of the best apple pies he'd ever had. He had to hold himself back so he didn't inhale it in one bite, even then he finished much quicker than you.
