Warnings: Angst, little bit of fluff

You and Chris had known each other for years, you practically grew up with him. Whenever he was in town the two of you were together hanging out, it wasn't uncommon for you to spend days round at his place. Both your families had commented how you two were cut from the same cloth, if anything came between you it would signal the end of the world.

He comforted you when you had a bad day at work, and he'd phone you whenever his mind got too loud and his anxieties were taking over. You were one of the few that talked him down and helped him take the role of captain America. You watched him go from strength to strength as his confidence grew and he became the man every woman on the planet would die to love.

And there had been a fair few women, not all of you passes your test. You were protective of him, you never wanted any harm to come to him. However you would always let him make his mistakes and were there for him when it eventually didn't work out. In the same way he was there for you when your relationships failed.

Over the years you'd always told people that you loved him, he was your best friend. What you didn't realise what kind of love you had for him. You always assumed that you loved him as a friend. You didn't realise that the feeling of distain towards his ex's was in fact jealousy.

You didn't realise you loved him, as in loved him loved him.

You didn't realise how much you wanted to run your hands through his silky brown hair. That you wanted his large, strong hands to grab yours and pull you into his arms. Feel his lips on yours and his hands roamed all over your body. You wanted to wake up and see him face every morning, you wanted to spend every second of every day with him for the rest of your life.

When you came to this realisation, you weren't overfilled with joy, you were scared.

Terrified.

Every moment that you spent together was painful. Hiding this wave of emotion when ever he laughed. It hurt, because you couldn't dare risk this friendship. It was the one friendship that got you through the toughest moments of your life. Moments that if they happened again and he wasn't there, you were certain they could kill you.

So here you were sat at home watching TV drowning your sorrows on your second bottle of wine. Or was it your third? You wrapped yourself in your blanket that you instantly realised smelt of Chris from the last time he was round. You wanted to throw it off you but tears fell as you wrapped it around you tighter imagining it was him hugging you.

A notification on your phone drew you from your pit of despair. It was a reminder that Chris' interview on the tonight show with Jimmy Fallon was tonight. You debated watching it, seeing his face would only make your heart swell and your despair worse. But you knew he'd ask you if you saw it, he'd be confused and concerned if you didn't. Sighing to yourself you turn the channel over waiting for the show to start.

When Chris finally came on you couldn't help but smile. He looked so good in his navy suit. As he smiled you could feel the happiness creeping in, as if he was smiling straight at you. You fill your glass back up taking a large sip to prepare yourself for the emotions you we're about to feel. The first half of the interview was spent talking about the upcoming captain America movie.

"So you were very hesitant to become Captain America isn't that correct" Jimmy asks.

Chris nods his head "yeah it took a lot of convincing to take on this role, i knew it would change my life and I was scared it would be for the worse" Chris explains running his hand through his hair biting his lip slightly causing butterflies to flutter in your stomach.

"Thats insane, so what was it that finally convinced you?" Jimmy asks.

Chris sighs to himself and looks nervous, he anxious as he rubs his a hands over his arms and legs.

"Well it was actually a very special person in my life, my best friend (Y/N)" Chris admits.

You nearly choke on your wine when he mentions your name. You place the glass down, you must of had too much to drink, this couldn't be real.

"She told me that we shouldn't be scared of things based on what might happen, because what fears are running through your head, while those might happen yes, they probably won't. and all the good things probably will. And your should back a probably over a might, and I'm eternally grateful for her because she's been there for me in my darkest moments, and if it wasn't for her turning that down would be one of the greatest regrets of my life" Chris explains a small shy smile playing on his lips.

You feel your heart swell as you heard all the things he said about you.

"Wow this (Y/N) sounds very close to you, sure she's just a friend?" Jimmy jokes playfully.

Chris looks back at him bashfully making jimmy gasp and bounce excitedly.

"Oh my god are you dating her?" Jimmy asks bouncing in his seat.

Chris bites his lip anxiously, you mirror him sitting forward to hear whatever he had to say.

"Not exactly, but god do I love her, she's incredible. She's the most amazing, kind, beautiful person i've ever met inside and out. She puts up with my bullshit and everything. I'd honestly be the luckiest man on earth if she'd have me" Chris explains smiling to himself.

The crowd erupted in cheers and awws and the ringing started in your ears.
You turned the TV off and started pacing back and forth. Did he really just admit his feelings for you on national TV.

He couldn't of. There was no way.

You were passed out on the couch from drinking too much wine. This was just a wine induced dream.

In your pacing you accidentally walk into your coffee table pain erupted in your leg. Pain that told you this wasn't a dream, this was all real. You fall to your knees the overwhelming emotions crashing down on you. Tears fell as you held yourself tightly.

He loved you. He. Loved. You.

Once your tears subsided you stood shakily, grabbing your keys and your coat.

You staggered over to the door but when you opened it you were face to face with Chris himself. He looked down at you worry etched across his face.

"(Y/N) what's wrong?" He asks grabbing your arms to hold you steady.

You stumble over your words, the emotions mixed with the wine meant everything you said was incoherent.

Chris led you over to the couch and held you close. As you calmed down slowly you noticed how he was mumbling that he was sorry over and over again. You looked up to see the pain in his eyes, he thought you didn't want him. He thought he'd caused this pain, he was hurting because he thought he'd ruined the friendship. You cup his cheek slowly and rub your thumb over his face wiping away the tears you had failed to notice.

"I love you too Chris" you mutter quietly.

He looks down at you shocked his eyes searching yours for further explanation.

"I'm sorry it took me so long to realise but i've always loved you Chris, and i will until my dying day" you tell him feeling the weight that was on your heart and shoulder disappear.

"I love you too, I realised that the reason nobody else worked out was because i kept comparing them to you, i wanted them to be you" Chris explain taking your hand in his and holding it over his heart "i wanted you, all this time i've wanted you" he admits.

You look up into his bright blue eyes and see nothing but love. You couldn't help but break out into a wide smile. You pulled him closer crashing your lips onto his thankful that he reciprocated immediately.

As your lips melded together and your tongues danced, you felt sparks fly and everything seemed right.

This felt right.

"I love you Chris" you mutter resting your forehead against his.

"I love you (Y/N)" he sighs capturing your lips in yours once again. Making you wonder why you didn't do this sooner.
