Warnings: Follows events of Civil War so its mostly angst sorry.
You remember that day vividly. Sat at home watching the news intensely. You were supposed to be at work but when the news broke you told your boss you felt a migraine coming on and needed to go home. You flipped your phone over and over in your hand. Waiting for a call, a text, anything.
You knew he wouldn't call, no matter how much he wanted to. And you couldn't call him, even if you were desperate. You just had to sit and worry, hoping someone somewhere had news. News that said he was okay, and that despite being the focus of an international manhunt he was safe.
As the story continued to develop the number of people who could give you news dwindled. Soon there was very few people left, and they either didn't know or wouldn't say.
You had grown desperate when you arrived at the Avengers compound. You didn't you the entrance you would usually use, instead going to the one which every other visitor would go to.
"Hello, I um- I'm here see Ms Potts" you say to the receptionist.
"She doesn't work here, the stark industries is based in the Tower in Manhattan" the receptionist says not even looking up from her computer.
"Please, I um got told to come here" you say hoping you could atleast get past reception.
"Look miss- You're in the wrong place" the woman sigh finally looking up.
"I can take her" you hear someone say behind you.
You turn to see Maria stood behind you arms crossed. You weren't sure if the cold expression on her face was aimed at you or the receptionist.
"Thank you" you sigh taking a small shaky breath.
"No problem, I'm Agent Hill, Ms Potts said you'd be popping over today" Maria says holding out her hand.
You play along shaking her hand with a small smile "(Y/N), thank you again" you say following her further into the compound.
She leads you through a maze of hallways until you reach one of the back stairwells that lead to the private residences of the Avengers. She nods you on, not following you up the stairs.
Once upstairs you see Tony waiting for you by the door. He had a deep frown across his face. His arm was still in a sling, the bruise on his face slowly fading.
"What the hell do you think you're doing (Y/N)?" He sighs shaking his head.
"I'm sorry, I just needed to know- know if he was okay" you say beginning to choke up.
Tony sighs walking over and pulling you into a hug rubbing your back soothingly as you sobbed. The emotions from the last couple weeks bubbling up and over.
"Look I don't know a lot, all I know is that they haven't found him and he's gotten everyone out" Tony says when you pull out of the hug.
You breath a small sigh of relief, it wasn't a lot of news but it wasn't bad news.
"He also asked me to pass this on" tony say reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out an envelope, passing it over to you.
You look over the envelope taking a shaky breath when you see your initial written in his distinctive handwriting. You run your finger over the letter repeatedly.
"Thank you Tony" you sigh.
He nods his head "you can't come back here anymore, Ross is determined to find him. Keeping you and your relationship with him a secret will keep you safe and that's what's everyone wants, especially him" he tells you.
