AMELIA'S POV
"Amelia, are you ready yet? Taylor should be here any minute," my mom called from downstairs.
"Yes, Mom, I'm ready," I replied, tugging the strap of my backpack tighter as I stood in the hallway, looking around one last time at the house I was about to leave.
Hi, I'm Amelia. I'm 4 years old and I live in New York City. Today was the big day I was moving in with my older siblings, Taylor and Austin. My parents had to go on a bunch of work trips out of town, and since they would be traveling a lot, they thought it would be best for me to stay with my brother and sister instead of moving around constantly. They didn't want me to have to keep switching schools every few months, making new friends, and leaving old ones behind. I was just about to start school in September, and they thought I should stay in one place so I could have a chance to settle in and make real friends. So, Taylor and Austin, along with my parents, decided it would be best for me to stay here in New York while they were away.
"Looks like Taylor's here," my mom said, peeking out the window.
I could hear her voice brighten as she saw my sister pull into the driveway. Taylor knocked on the door, and my mom immediately opened it, smiling and welcoming her inside. Taylor was always so cheerful, and I could tell she was excited to have me move in with her and Austin.
"Hey, Amelia! You ready to go?" Taylor asked as she crouched down to my level, smiling big.
I nodded, feeling a little nervous but mostly excited. I was going to be living with my siblings, and even though they were grown-ups, they were still fun to hang out with. All my stuff had already been packed up and taken to their house earlier in the week, so today was mostly just about saying goodbye to Mom and Dad and getting settled in. It was a little weird, though, this was the first time I'd be away from my parents for more than just a few days. I grabbed the last bag I had with me, which was stuffed with my favorite toys and some clothes, and followed Taylor out to the car. The drive to their house was quiet. I looked out the window, watching the familiar streets of our neighborhood turn into the busy city roads as Taylor's car hummed along. I wasn't sure what I was feeling—excited, nervous, or maybe a little bit of both. I knew my siblings were great people, and I liked spending time with them. Taylor was super fun, and Austin was always so calm and kind. But their jobs? That was a different story.
Taylor was a dentist. And while I knew she helped people by fixing their teeth, I couldn't help but feel a little nervous around her because, well, dentists are kind of like doctors, and doctors are scary. I didn't like the idea of someone poking around inside my mouth with sharp tools. Just thinking about it made my stomach squirm. And then there was Austin. Austin was a family physician, meaning he was a doctor for anyone, no matter how old they were. I wasn't exactly sure what a family doctor did all the time, but I knew they helped people stay healthy. That sounded nice, but it also made me wonder: What if I needed help? Would he have to use a needle on me? Would it hurt? Even though Austin was kind and always made me laugh, I couldn't help but be a little scared of the idea of seeing him as a doctor. The car ride felt longer than it probably was. I kept my hands in my lap, feeling the seat beneath me and wondering what the next few days would be like. Would I get to stay up late and watch movies? Would Taylor and Austin let me pick out all the snacks I wanted? Maybe it wouldn't be so bad living with them. After all, they were my family, and I trusted them. But there was still a little voice in my head reminding me that things were going to be different. I'd be away from Mom and Dad, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Finally, after what felt like forever, we pulled into the parking lot of their building. I took a deep breath, trying to push away the nervous feelings swirling in my chest. Taylor smiled at me through the rearview mirror as she put the car in park.
"Here we are!" she said, her voice cheerful as always. "This is going to be so much fun, Amelia. I promise."
I wasn't so sure yet, but I was about to find out.
