It's been a couple weeks since I've been back in Seattle and since I've been back, I've been getting in the routine of getting the twins to daycare, getting a cup of coffee and sit in the auditorium to listen to Amy's lectures. And now, today is the day that Amy operates on Herman. I walk into the scrub room and I see Amy looking into the OR.
Delilah: hi.
Amy looks over at me and pulls me into a hug.
Amy: tell me something. Anything, anything that'll stop me from freaking out.
Delilah: you can do this Ames. You've been preparing yourself for this moment, everything will be okay. You're Amelia Shepherd, the most badass neurosurgeon I know. You can do this. You're a freakin' superhero Amelia.I kiss Amy on the forehead then I go off to the OR gallery. I find a seat in the front and I watch very closely as my aunt starts.
Amy: start the clock please.
Once the clock has started, Amy makes the cut. People start showing up and watch the surgery. I'm sitting in between Mer and Maggie as I watch my aunt closely.
Maggie: so... this is a regular thing. You all come up here and you watch surgeries. Why?
Meredith: not just surgeries– the big surgeries, the whale surgeries...
Delilah: the rare ones...
M&D: the crazy ones.
Meredith: I mean...
M&D: you're on the edge of your seat.
Delilah: the patient could die...
M&D: this is life or death.
Meredith: the adrenaline...
M&D: the rush.Maggie looks at us in concern.
Maggie: do you guys always do that?
M&D: do what?
Maggie: talk at the same time.
Delilah: oh, yeah. We spend way too much time together that we've just—
Meredith: gotten into the habit of it. We can also finish each other's—
Delilah: sentences. And we can practically read each other's mind. Mer and I always joke that we're sisters in another universe.Mer and I share a laugh.
Maggie: anyways... so you watch, like, the worst day of a person's life like a movie.
Meredith: no, not like a movie.
Delilah: that's insulting.
Meredith: exactly. This is not entertainment. "Movie".
Delilah: oooh, this is where it gets good.Mer hands me an orange and I hand her a granola bar then we eat as we watch.
Amy: let's go ahead and inject the dye. Lights please.
I watch very closely as they start injecting the dye.
Guy: what does the dye do?
Delilah: the dye makes the whole tumor glow so that we can see where the tumor ends and where the brain begins.I watch very closely. My aunt looks up and we make eye contact. I nod my head and her and mouth 'I believe in you' to her.
-later on-
Stephanie: Dr. Shepherd is now cutting the tumor away from the gyrus rectus.
Guy: gyrus rectus?
Meredith: the area responsible for our sense of smell.I watch closely as the surgery goes on. Callie keeps talking so we all shush her then we keep watching.
Stephanie: Dr. Shepherd is now clearing the tumor away from the midbrain structures... the fornix, the thalamus.
I go to the edge of my seat as I watch.
Delilah: wait. Oh god... she's already behind. Come on Ames, you can do this.
Stephanie: uh, using extreme care not to violate the interior commissure. Dr. Shepherd calls this the dream box.
Guy: Dr. Grey, I'm sorry, but "dream box"?
Delilah: where we create dreams and memories and discern shapes and colours. Read a book for the love of God, you imbecile.
