Chapter 46 Episode 45: Chances

As Schroeder sat on the ground, alone, with his back resting against the wall in the halls of the Shard Court, Zotek walks in and took notice of the look of guilt on Schroeder's face.
  "Hey." Zotek said.
"Hey." Schroeder said as he didn't bother sparing Zotek the attention of looking at him.
"How is he doing?" Zotek asked.
"You really want to know?" Schroeder asked, "They said Onak changed the shape of his skull; his bones were crushed and he is barely breathing. Bear in mind these are the few things i chose to mention, the rest… He's incredibly lucky to be alive.
Leorona has decided to take responsibility in healing Xorian and the Keigra healers decided to assist her in speeding up his recovery. Kan users heal and recover faster than non-Kan users; what could take years for a non-Kan user to recover, could take months or days. What could take them months, could take us days or a few minutes but that doesn't mean we can recover from all injuries."
  "Indeed." Zotek said.
"Did you see the look on their faces?" Schroeder asked, "… Xorian's parents? So much pain and worries. They are not sure if they'll be able to see their son again despite the healers doing their work. Even Jagami and her parents were worried and all i could just do was stand there and watch…"
"Tell me something, Zotek… Do you feel guilty about what you did?" Schroeder asked as his eyes rolls towards him.
   "I do." Zotek answered.
"Is that so?" Schroeder asked as he turned his face away, "You don't look like it. You played a game with the life of someone else's child and took away the movement of Leorona and i, so as to make sure we don't stop them.
I knew you were capable of a lot of things but i never thought you were capable of gambling with the lives of others just to achieve your goal."
   "Schroeder…" Zotek called.
"I couldn't even use my dark sand to move." Schroeder said, "All i could do was stand and watch as Onak beat Xorian to a bloody pulp. If he hadn't stopped, he would have killed Xorian and things won't have ended well at all.
Did you think about that? Did you think of what would have befell not just Xorian but Onak and the others as well? Of course, you didn't. You were so focused on achieving the results of Onak's training that you didn't think otherwise."
"You're right." Zotek said, "What i did was unacceptable; i did step out of line and i offer no excuses."
"You don't say." Schroeder said, "You know, i just don't get you. Even Leorona is still in shock about what you did."
"Shigure! I've found his missing arm!!" A Keigra healer said as he ran past the both of them while holding an arm in his hand.
Silence filled the hall again but it was finally broken as Schroeder sighed.
"You said you feel guilty about what you did but the question is, will you do it again? If another terrible situation should occur, are you willing to gamble with the lives of others to get results?" Schroeder asked as his eyes rolls towards Zotek, "Well, are you?"
Zotek remains mute and continues staring at Schroeder which led Schroeder to a conclusion.
"I see." Schroeder said as he stood on his feet, "You really have changed but not for the better.
Tell me, why are you assisting me in taking down these Hivelings? What is your true motive?"
"What are you talking about?" Zotek asked.
"Are you trying to stop them because you don't want the death of the students to be in vain or are you taking them out because you have an ulterior motive?" Schroeder asked.
"I'm taking them down because i don't want everything to be in vain." Zotek answered.
"But in that 'everything' there is something else, correct?" Schroeder asked.
Zotek ignores Schroeder's question and continues staring at him which led Schroeder to frown at Zotek.
"You really have changed." Schroeder said as he walks past Zotek.
"Yes… Maybe i have." Zotek said as he bent his head
Elsewhere in the Shard Court, Chief Miza was discussing with a man in a green cloak and handed him over a bag of coins.
"The boy… Onak… He is from the Graundar tribe but yet i don't know anything about him." Chief Miza said, "I want you to go and learn everything you can about him.
His background, his power; i must understand why and how a person like that exists in my tribe. Do not disappoint me."
"Yes, Chief Miza." The man said as he bowed his head.
As the man had left the place, Chief Miza turns around and began to walk away.
"Onak, you exist within my tribe and yet i don't know a thing about you or your parents… This is truly interesting." Chief Miza said within herself with a smirk, "I look forward in watching you compete more in this tournament."
Meanwhile in another place of the Shard court, a teenage pink colored female with antennas, long deep blue hair, blue scleras and white irises, was hiding in the shadows with the visage of anger as she was observing Onak walking alone.
"I'm taking him down." The girl said inwardly.
"Don't do it, Zeinora." A masculine voice replied telepathically.
"Why?!" Zeinora asked telepathically, "That bastard is the one that killed my uncle Basak! He has to pay!"
"Focus on the task!" The voice replied, "He may not be able to sense you because of the stealth level that was placed on you and your teammates but you are not invisible.
If you move right now to attack him, he will see you and he will kill you!"
"So you're saying i should let him get away with Basak's murder?!" Zeinora asked.
"Basak was just unfortunate; a victim of circumstances." The voice replied, "Fate didn't smile on him and if you go right now to attack him, you'll end up like your uncle!
Look, i'm trying my best to multitask myself by using kan communication of the heart to discuss with you and the others. I still have to communicate with the others to know how far they have gone in the task.
Don't screw this up. You are strong… Very strong but do you honestly think you can defeat him?"
"I don't think i can defeat him, i know i can defeat him." Zeinora replied.
"Zeinora, don't do this!" The voice said, "We Hivelings have a responsibility and we have to see it through! Your revenge can wait but the task can't!"
"Wrong. The task can wait but my revenge can't." Zeinora said as her eyes glowed.
"Zeinora, don't!!" The masculine voice said as Zeinora advanced towards Onak.
At that moment Zeinora ran towards him, Onak's eyes quickly rolls back as it glowed and blood splattered on the wall. Back at the arena, Lizira took notice of her hands trembling which led her to recall her discussion with Chief Grai in one of the many rooms in the Shard Court.
"Lizira, what was that earlier?" Chief Grai asked as he was facing the wall.
  "Chief Grai, i-"
"You messed up back there." Chief Grai said, "I gave you one task and you didn't do it properly. When that Graundar savage sent that Kenar boy bouncing around the arena, that was a good time to end the match but you didn't and because you didn't end the match quickly, that animal went out of control."
"I'm so sorry." Lizira said as she bent her head while holding her wrist.
"You should be." Chief Grai said, "And next time you go out there, you better do your work properly or i will send someone else."
"Understood?" Chief Grai asked as his eyes rolls back at Lizira.
After remembering that incident, Lizira balled her trembling hand and exhales.
"Chief Grai trusted me with this task and i cannot afford to fail him." Lizira said within herself, "I have to prove to him that i am better than my failure of a husband Trengal."
Lizira's eyes moves towards the left side of the Chief center and spots Chief Grai; Chief Grai nods his head and Lizira responds with a nod of her own.
"Because of me that Graundar boy almost killed Xorian." Lizira said within herself, "I won't let it happen again."
At the audience center as Rikon sat alone, he quickly had a recollection of Jagami and Xorian's mother crying on the bed Xorian laid on in the medical room while Xoran, Jagami's parents and Rikon were watching with a saddened demeanor. After the recollection, Rikon sighed.
"The parents of those two chose to stay in the room with their children and i had to give them some space." Rikon said within himself, "However, if it was my child that was in that state, i don't think i would have been able to cope.
After this tournament, I'd like to see my wife and son."
"Rikon…" A feminine voice telepathically called, causing Rikon's irises to glow as he was caught off guard, "Rikon, come to me."
"Kan communication of the heart?" Rikon asked within himself, "But this kan, why does it feel like a non human?"
Elsewhere at the audience center, Govo furrowed his brows as he stared down at the arena with his arms crossed.
"Pit, you've finally gotten your chance to redeem yourself." Govo said within himself.
Down at the arena, Karma and Pit locked eyes as they stood afar from each other.
"I don't know, won't this end the same way?" Idjra asked.
"I'm not sure." Raen replied, "Pit has shown us that she has gotten stronger and that she is not to be underestimated."
"Well, she is an A+ candidate." Idjra said.
"Still though, Karma is an S ranked candidate and is the strongest among us." Raen said.
"I'm not sure about her being the strongest." Yulin said with a smile, "I used to strongly believe that but my views has changed. Anyway i managed to get information on how Karma became an S ranked candidate."
   "You did?" Idjra asked, "How?"
"Yulin, what did you do?" Raen asked as she scowled at her.
"Calm down, Raen." Yulin said, "You don't have to think i'm always doing something bad.
Anyway, i snuck into where the teachers keep their records and i found something that made me smile. There was a certain task that the teachers were planning to keep away from us because they viewed it as way too dangerous but Karma finished it by herself.
I then asked Sting to help me find out how Karma was able to participate in such and man, what he revealed was unbelievable."
"Well, what was it?" Idjra asked.
"Sting explained that through him endlessly bothering his uncle Zotek, he revealed that the task Karma participated in by herself only happened because Karma challenged the teachers they should give her 3 minutes and she will be done, but she finished it in two."
"Woah…" Idjra said in shock, "She finished it in two minutes?"
"And you think this doesn't make Karma the strongest among us?" Raen asked.
"Well, yeah." Yulin said, "Like i said, i used to believe that, especially when Karma defeated me and the others with just her glare but i later came to realize something: being a top ranked candidate isn't really because of your level of power but because of of how well you performed in class, tasks and trainings.
Karma is extremely strong but there are a few people that could easily rival her and i'm quite sure that if those people went to participate in that task by themselves, they would have finished it as well."
"You said i should stop assuming everything you do is bad but yet you snuck into a private place?" Raen asked as her eyes rolls towards Yulin.
"Yeah, you see i can explain." Yulin said as she glanced at Raen while smiling nervously.
At the arena, Karma and Pit both stared at each other while having their arms crossed.
"Looks like i'll have to fight you again." Karma said, "Humph. You won't even make a good warm-up."
"Warm up?" Pit asked with a raised eyebrow.
"How impertinent." Pit said as she activated her panora eyes.
  "Begin!" Lizira said.
In a blink of an eye, Karma dashed towards Pit to punch her only for Pit to appear far behind Karma, leaving her attack to send a strong wind that created a rift on the ground.
"Such speed…" Killer bee said within herself, "If it was anyone slower, the speed and power of the attack would left the person unconscious or worse!"
Down at the arena, plentiful wind pressures were creating rifts on different areas of the ground and a large booming sound occurred, filling the place with dusts.
Pit hops out of the dust but Karma appeared in front of her.
"Dragon's art: Raging swarm!" Karma said as she unleashes a barrage of rapid-fire punches that was creating numerous gusts of wind(which Pit flawlessly evades).
"Dragon's art: Tail of carnage!" Karma said as she performs a quick leg sweep in attempt to kick Pit's head (which Pit bends over to evade, leaving Karma's attack to create a powerful gust of wind that spread throughout the arena).
"That was the move Karma used to one-shot Obaru and give him a brain damage." Kein said within himself.
"Dragon's art: Tail of carnage!" Pit said as she immediately performs a quick leg sweep on Karma's head that created a powerful gust of wind while sending Karma bouncing head-first on the ground repeatedly.
Many of the audience eyes widened in shock as they watched Karma stand on her feet while rubbing the side of her head with her eyes closed. Karma opens her eyes and was caught off guard as Pit appeared in front of her.
"Dragon's art: Raging swarm!" Pit said as she unleashes a barrage of rapid-fire punches (which Karma guards against with both arms).
Despite Karma guarding against the attacks, the raging swarm was releasing powerful wind pressures that were creating large rifts on the ground. Karma tries to disrupt the attack by throwing a punch of her own but Pit appears above Karma.
"Dragon's art: Twin dragon talons!" Pit said as she landed a somersaulting double legged axe kick on Karma's head, driving her face straight to the ground and filling the place with large dust-clouds.
"Oh! Karma hasn't performed this type of technique in this fight but it seems like there is some kind of bad blood between these two!!" Lizira said, "Attack after attack, Pit has copied and dished them back at Karma and has finalized her rampage with this move! This is exciting!!"
"Damn, Pit is really going hard on her." Hyle said within himself.
Karma suddenly flew out of dust-clouds and bounced on her back repeatedly but finally managed to stabilize herself with both hands.
"You should have known that speed on that level doesn't work on me after my match with Govo." Pit's voice sounded in the dust-clouds as a shadow figure was walking out of it, "Understand this, when we first fought, i didn't give it my all because i considered you as my friend. But this time…"
"I'm fighting for real." Pit said as she stepped out of the dusts while frowning.
