"I am so embarrassed, oh my god." I hide my face in my palms and Alan laughs beside me."You should have told me that you already knew." I whine. I made a fool of myself when Mrs. Smith offered me dinner and there I was trying to be polite about her food and said things which I thought in my head are right.
"And missed out your lecture on how prawn are bigger but ours isn't." he laughs and I cringe at the double meaning.
"I know that prawn and shrimp are different things. I mean in England we call it prawn and here it's shrimp. Although I don't live in England but still since start I only heard prawn from my Dad's mouth which is why I was lecturing. God." I groan. Today Mrs. Smith made shrimps and I don't know how the topic drifted to prawn and I start to lecture how shrimp is shrimp in America and prawn is for England. I have eaten shrimp many times in restaurant and I always used to call it prawn by habit. Dad never corrected me and now I feel stupid because I thought they wouldn't know because well they live in America.
You live in America too since birth. My subconscious mocks me.
"Relax you are acting as if my Mom is Gordon Ramsay although he would be proud since you are connected to your roots. Prawn." He adds and then starts laughing. This time I can't help and laugh too.
"I hope she isn't thinking I am dumb. I mean I eat food but knowing about them is different."
"Oh yeah then why did you open your mouth. It's Cilantro not parsley I can tell by the smell." He says in a horrible British accent and I give him a look.
"First of all that was a very bad impression, I am glad I don't have any accent because I would be offended. Second, there I was right."
"Sure you were." He rolls his eyes. Before I can say anything, his sister joins us in the living room and sits beside me.
"Hey! I bring these cookies is there any other name for it in England that we should know about?" She asks and just like that she and her brother start laughing at me. I roll my eyes and Mrs. Smith enters in the room and I hide my eyes from her.
"What's so funny?" she asks.
"Oh nothing Mom we were just discussing about the great dinner you made for us and Evanna was telling us more about it." Kate, Alan's sister replies and her mother looks confused.
"Okay...well Evanna do you really like the dinner?" She asks me but before I can answer, Alan interjects.
"Yes ma, she did, didn't you heard how smaller our shrimps were."
I glare at him before answering his mother. "Of course Mrs. Smith I loved it so much, you didn't even have to ask."
"Then why did you eat so less?"
"I-I...just, you know I work in café and all the smell I inhale and everything my stomach gets half full from all of it." I smile and after that she chats with me more. Alan and I have already finished studying and now I am preparing to leave. Kate talks to me a lot even though it's the first time she actually talks to me yet I feel no awkwardness. Since she saw me, she is been telling me how pretty I am and gesturing her brother to say the same. I know deep down she is shipping us because of the way she looks at us and also because I am the first girl Alan brought here.
"Okay Mrs. Smith, I should go now. It's getting late. Thanks for the dinner again." I say and stand up, gathering my stuffs in my bag.
"It's not right for her to go alone at this time. I am so sorry that we can't drop you. Our car is at service and..."
"It's okay really Mrs. Smith. I will just book a cab, you don't have to worry."
"Honey, it's about your safety. Alan from now on why don't you go at her place. The poor girl has to come from work straight out of here and then go back. You could easily go and I didn't have to worry about her safety." Her mother instructs and before I can say something Kate does.
