When we make it there, we find Soos already standing in front of it protectively, ready to safeguard the machine at any cost.
"Soos?" Dipper asked in surprise.
Soos nearly got a heart attack the moment he saw us rushing to him. "Ahh! Oh, kids! Where've you been?"
"What are you doing here?" Dipper prodded.
"Stan gave me a mission to protect this machine! Ha! And I thought I loved snacks."
"Soos, listen. Something huge is going on here. If Stan is hiding some dangerous secret, we need to find out what it is! I need you to step aside," Dipper said firmly.
"Yeah, just let us through so we can prove this is all just a big misunderstanding," Mabel added.
Soos rubs his neck ashamedly. "Guys, I know this seems crazy, but I promised Stan I would guard this with my life."
Mabel looked towards Dipper and after he gave her a curt nod, Mabel apologises to Soos before she blows glitter in his eyes.
"Aah! Attack glitter! It's pretty, but it hurts!"
The twins began pushing against him and jumped on him, trying to force their way through him but he stood his ground. I watch them from a distance as they tried their hardest to get past him. They ultimately do make a breakthrough in their efforts once Dipper successfully enters the code to the vending machine. The doors to the vending machine then gave way, knocking the three of them involved in the scuffle earlier back. The three of them sat on the ground, coughing heavily from the dust that pervaded the air and after they regained their composure, they gasped at the mere sight of the secret passage.
I walk over to them and after helping each of them up, we walk down the secret passage, with Soos leading the way down the stairs with his lantern to a primordial door which I was positive was the lift that would lead us down to the room where the portal was kept.
"It's like something from a video game..." Soos said dreamily, his head turning with every step he descended to inspect his surroundings, all of us pretty much doing the same at the moment.
"Or a dream..." Mabel chimed in.
"Or a nightmare..." Dipper gave his view.
"Always looking on the bright side of things I see," I muttered to myself, this time, no one hearing what I said as the three of them were riveted by what they were seeing.
We bridge the gap between the stairs and the door, an old and dusty button presiding over the doors that safeguarded the lift behind it. Soos presses the button and a distant 'ding' later, the doors open to reveal the lift which we rode in seconds later, bringing us down to the author's secret lair that the viewers of the show all knew so well. A plethora of machines lined either side of his hideout, the buttons on it blinking and flashing sporadically and tentatively, with its circumambient cables dangling overhead as if they were watching over everything the room sheltered and at the very end of it all, a timer perenially emitted 'beeps' in tandem with the seconds that ticked by, remaining stone-faced by our entrance.
All of us, including me, gasped in stupefaction after our gazes swept across the room, gaping and marvelling at the assortment of machines that were in there. 'Everything seems different once you see them in real life, in front of your own two eyes.'
"Guys, are we dreaming? Somebody wake me up." Mabel progressed into the room and walked ahead of us.
"This can't be real..." My brother said in disbelief and also a hint of anger, possibly at Stan for keeping this from us, or me since I already knew this room existed a long time ago. He, like Mabel, walked ahead, the only difference was that he trod more carefully.
