Her cheeks were stained with tears, with a fake smile on her face as she tightly gripped a piece of paper that said,"CAN I COME OVER..NEED A FEW THINGS," in black marker.

Seeing her crying..seeing her put on a front-it was all coming back to me. That feeling,.that need to do something..that need to save her. It had been awhile but it was still as familiar as ever.

I nod a few times, mouthing,"Come," and she mouths back, "thank you". I give her one final nod, before quickly looking away. I close the shade, unsure of what do other than sit here and wait for her.

I pace for a few minutes before going into the closet and pulling out her box of medicine. I wait on my desk chair pretending to look over a few pictures that didn't make the cut for my portfolio before chucking them into the drawer.

I Look out the other window that over looks the front of my house and see Jo's father still outside. When the engine of a car roars to life, I realize Jo clearly was waiting for him to go before she could come.

A few minutes later I here a knock on the front door and I quickly rush downstairs to answer it. I nearly topple over on the last few steps, my heart suddenly racing like crazy. I stand there, my hand on the door handle taking a minute to breath and just compose myself before finally pulling the door open.

"Are you okay?" She asks me, sniffling her nose.

"Me?" I question, stepping aside to let her in.

"I saw you trip," She mumbles, coming inside, standing in the center on my house in between the halls and stairs.

"How did you.." I begin to ask. Wondering how much stupider I looked for just standing in front of the door trying to calm myself.

"The glass is opaque but when you've got the lights on you can see movement," She explains further, wrapping her hands around herself, looking a lot less comfortable in my house then she was at the beginning of the summer.

"I'm fine," I utter, scratching the back of my neck. I felt out of my element..Jo was just all around intimidating but now..now I was at a loss for words.

I hadn't fully thought this through..what was I suppose to say?

"You're clumsy," She smiles at me, laughing lightly..not in a mocking way, more of a way of admiration.

"How'd you end up in a wheelchair?" She blurts, looking just as awkward as me as we just stand here. This was a weird place in the house..it was just kind of an in between with no distractions. I didn't know whether to move this conversation upstairs or just wait here until she asks where her medicine is.

"I uh- I fell..down like a..a hill," I ramble and she nods as if I just explained it all. we stare at each other for a few seconds, she opens her mouth to say something before closing it..I do the same when she actually speaks.

"Do you think I could get my stuff.."

"Yea..yea sure it's um..your stuffs up in my room," I rush to say stepping toward the stairs.

"I'll just wait here..I have to get home. I don't know when my dad will be back," She tells me.

"Okay..let me just grab the box," I tell her and she nods.

I half walk, half rush up the stairs to my room. When I reach my bed, I hear a knock at the door and so I snatch the box from my bed and rush back down.
