Song of Four Millenniums

The night grew long and chilly. Yao and I headed straight to our rooms to rest after the busy day. Since we ate outside, we were already full and decided to go to bed early.

I changed my clothes and carefully placed the dress Yao bought for me in my dresser.

"He was really kind to buy this for me. I hope I can get him something good too," I thought to myself.

I switched off the lights and went to bed.

However, even after a while of closing my eyes and pulling the blankets on top of me, I couldn't fall asleep. I finally sat up, sighing.

"Since the begining of the heaven and the earth
Countless soldiers spun history by overlapping their lives, aru."

Suddenly, I heard a song. I looked around, surprised.

Was that Yao?

I got down from my bed and walked towards my door. Slowly opening it, I peeped out. No one there.

Was I imagining it?

"On the banks of Yangtze..."

There it was again! There was no mistaken, it definitely was Yao's voice. I carefully walked down the corridor and opened the door to the main hall.

He wasn't there either.

"There is a single caged dove
In front of the Great Wall, the sun rises again, aru!"

I followed the song till I found a door half-opened. I peered in, and finally found Yao sitting at his backyard corridor, staring up at the crescent moon.

"Selfishly, I think of the past ― how nostalgic, aru...
Nǐ hǎo ma? My body hurts all over, aru
I will even make new sweets, aru."

This song...

I leaned forward against the door, but accidentally opened it all the way and nearly fell in.

Yao turned back in surprise. "(Y/n)?"

"Y-Yao, I just heard the song and...and..." I stammered.

I wanted to ask him about this song. The pain behind it that he refuses to share with me. The memories that are spun within every word of it...I wanted to learn about it.

Yao stared at me for sometime then without saying a word, patted on the seat next to him. I gingerly went up and sat beside him.

"Our country..."

I looked at him as he spoke.

"Has a long history, aru. Sometimes, I wish I could relive all those times," he said, his eyes filled with nostalgia.

"Your country's history must've been beautiful, Yao," I smiled.

He nodded. "However, our land has been dyed red with innocent blood since as far as I can remember, aru," he sadly smiled.

Yao...I didn't know you still held such unbearable pain within your heart...The usual cheerful heart of the man I knew, was always being clenched by the tragedies of the past...

Even if time passes by, the pain still remains...

I remembered Yao's scar and his heartwrenching smile. Bringing those memories back made my heart ache for him.

Yao took in a deep breath.

"When I wake up, I cannot be beaten, aru!
As brave as a lion.
My state of selflessness is dyed red, aru!
Depend on me at any time
Ai yaa yaa."

He glanced at me with a smile.

That wasn't just a smile. I can feel it was his way of telling that he is alright and he can still be relied for support...

Yes, Yao. You are the bravest lion I had ever seen.

"Did you know, (Y/n)? Japan and I used to sit in the same spot and look at the moon, aru," he cheerfully said.
"Really? That's great, Yao!"

He softly chuckled. "Back then, we used to argue over whether the rabbit on the moon was pounding rice cakes or making medicines."

I smiled as I watched Yao reminiscing the good memories he had.

"The child I found that day within the bamboos
I raised him to be sturdy and strong, aru.
Do you remember the moon we gazed at together, aru?"

"You still love Kiku as your own brother, don't you, Yao?" I asked.

He stopped. With a hint of sorrow in his eyes yet a smile on his lips, he nodded. "Shì, aru."

Contended by his answer, my heart felt at ease. I closed my eyes and listened to Yao's soulful song as I leaned against him.

"Wǎnshàng hǎo! The rabbit is pounding medicine, aru.
This sky extends to the ends of the earth, aru!
The wind runs through this vast land
Proudly, like a dragon.
The star that is suspended on the red is flown high
And shines on us, aru.
Ai yaa yaa."

May time stop here with no one but only the two of us under this night sky.

Yao looked beside him to see a sleeping (Y/n) leaning against him. He smiled as he gently stroked her head.

"In the grief of this unending world
Why is it that people fight, aru?
Regardless of the injury, the day it will heal will come, aru.
Leave everything to me
Ai yaa yaa."

He carefull wrapped his arms around her and picked her up like a bride.

Looking at her, he softly whispered. "Even if our countries are different, if our words are different, if our characters are different, I always want to...gaze at the same moon as you."

Fireflies twinkled in the garden as a farewell to this blessed couple as Yao took the love of his life inside to her room.
