Back at the Mansion...

"I have finished this set of files, Yao. Where should I keep them?" I asked him.
"Aiyah, you're so fast, (Y/n)!" The Chinese man was surprised.

I smiled. "I tried my best not to disappoint you."
His expressions stiffened. "You did this...for me, aru?"

"Yes, of course!"

He looked down at the floor, a sad smile on his face. "Thank you...No one has ever thought so much about me before, aru..."

"What do you mean, Yao?" I looked at him, worried.

He raised up his head and gave a warm smile. "It's nothing, (Y/n). Let's continue with the work, aru."
"Umm...yes."

Yao handed me another pile of files to work on while he signed the documents that were kept in front of him. So much work...Being a country surely seemed tough. I went through each and every paper carefully.

"(Y/n), you seem really good at this kind of work. Are you trained, aru?" Yao asked me.

"Oh, no. Actually, I learnt it from my father. I wanted to be good at this kind of things so that ‐" I stopped. My face turned red.
"So that?"
I averted my gaze and spoke softly.

"...so that...I could help my future husband with his work..."

"Aiyah! Is that so?!" Yao exclaimed.

I didn't have the courage to look at his face. Maybe he would start laughing at me now.

"You're like the girl of every man's dream, aru!"

I looked at him in disbelief. He was smiling brightly at me. His cheerful smile made me feel warm from inside.

"You...don't find that silly?" I asked him.
"Silly? Why would I find that silly, aru? You're so amazing, (Y/n)!"
"Because..." I frowned.

Yao stood up from his seat and walked up to me. He sat beside me and faced me with a soft look.

"(Y/n), you are such a wonderful girl, aru. You think so much about others. Your husband will be the luckiest man to live, I believe that, aru."

"Really?" I blushed.
"Of course, aru!"

Yao was so kind and considerate. His words always calmed my heart. Maybe that's why I like being around him.

"(Y/n), you are still so young. What are your plans for the future, aru?"

I smiled shyly. "I...want to get married to the man I love and raise a family with him."
Yao smiled. "I'm guessing that man is Japan, right aru?"
My cheeks grew redder as I nodded.

"A family, huh, aru?" Yao stared out the window.

"I wish I had a family too..." he said.

"Yao..."

He turned to me. "Japan and the other Asian countries are like my family, aru...But sometimes, I wish that I had someone I could call my own..."

I felt sad for Yao. He is always smiling even when he is in pain. And because of that no one notices his sadness.

"Yao..."

I looked into his eyes and smiled as warmly as I could.

"Some bonds are really beautiful, even when they are not blood‐related...You raised Kiku and the others with love, didn't you? That love defines your relationship with them. That's what makes it so precious..."

"(Y/n)..."

"And I'm sure someday you'll have your own family! You will find a nice woman who would deeply love you for who you are. You deserve a happy life, Yao, and I'm sure you'll have it one day."

I noticed a drop of colorless liquid fall on the ground. I looked up and saw tears in Yao's eyes.

Did I make him cry? What have I just done?!

"I'm sorry, Yao. I didn't mean to hurt you in anyway. I ‐ "

Before I could finish, Yao pulled me into a tight embrace. He rested his head beside my neck and I could feel his warm tears on my skin.

"I‐I always show myself to be s‐strong, but...I'm so lonely, aru..." he sobbed.

I could feel his pain somehow. Seeing him cry made my eyes moist too. I wrapped my arms around him and caressed his back.

"Even if you are strong, it doesn't mean you can't cry. You have feelings too. And you're not alone, Yao. I will always be with you, I promise."

"Really, aru?" He looked up at me with hope in his wet eyes.
"Yes, I promise. So please, don't cry anymore." I smiled.
"But you're..."
"Yes?"

He thought for a while and then wiping away his tears, he stood up. "Alright, aru!"
His sudden burst of energy startled me. "What is it, Yao?"

"You remember that I made a promise to you, aru?"
"Umm...about Kiku and me?" I responded, confused.
"That one! It's time I kept my promise, aru! I will make sure you and Japan come closer to each other!"

His resolute made me giggle. I stood up from my seat and bowed before him.

"(Y‐Y/n)? What are you doing, aru?"

"Thank you very much, Yao. For everything that you're doing for me. I appreciate it."

The Chinese country chuckled. "I think you and Japan would make a perfect pair, aru."
I blushed. "You think so...?"
"Yes, aru."

All of a sudden, I noticed a distant look cross his face.

He whispered softly. "You are destined to be with Japan, not..."

I could not hear what he said in the end. I was about to ask him when I heard noises from outside. It seems that the other countries have returned.

"Looks like the others have come back, aru. Let's complete our work and go join them, okay (Y/n)?"
"Yes!"

Today I saw a lion weeping...But even then, he is a lion. He will stand strong again.
