As surgeons we live in a world of worst-case scenarios. We cut ourselves off from hoping for the best because too many times the best doesn't happen. But every now and then something extraordinary occurs ...

Blake stared at Meredith whose expression was pinched , unbelievable and frankly a bit scary.

and suddenly best-case scenarios seem possible.

"Mer who was on the phone?" She asked pushing aside her breakfast and focused solely on woman in front of her.

And every now and then...something amazing happens

Meredith put her cellphone down on the kitchen counter, her mind still playing Mrs Henry's words over and over again.

"My mother.. she's lucid." She whispered out.

And against our better judgment, we start to have hope.

Blake nodded slowly "Okay.. I can change my shift, then I can head with you—""

Meredith shook her head "No.. you don't have to, the clinic is opening today, Bailey wants you there early. It's okay. I'll go and see her." She breathed out with teary eyes. Blake stood to her feet rounding the counter and cupped Meredith's cheeks in her hands, she wiped away the falling tears.

"If you need me, I'll be there." She promised "Just say the word Mer.."

Meredith shook her head "No.. it's okay.I'll be okay.. go to work baby." She refused softly, Blake didn't look convinced and Meredith wasn't sure she believed herself either. Having Blake with her would make things easier but she didn't know what to expect , not if her mother was lucid after five years. "I'll be fine."

Blake sighed inwardly at the stubborn woman "Okay.. okay. Just give me a call. And I'll be there faster than you can say craniotomy."

Meredith laughed wetly "I know baby..and thank you."

SGH - Duquette- Carmichael memorial clinic

Blake stood beside Bailey staring at the building, it was nice. And had been built within eight days. "eight days.. those contractors must've really been some motivation or a really bossy boss." She murmured side eying her resident. Whose smile could rival Meredith's, it wasn't wide or anything, in fact it was small, but it was genuine.

"And we are open for business." said Bailey softly.

Ambulance bay.

The ambulance pulled up and Blake blinked in surprise when Meredith was walking beside the gurney. She walked forward.

"Dr.Grey?" She started but Meredith was in a daze.

"She had sub-sternal chest pains.." she trailed off when the woman in the gurney spoke almost exasperated

"chest pains and sycopy. My pace was in the 200's but that rate has resolved on it's own." Blake looked at the older grey and glanced at Meredith.

"Be that as it may Dr.Grey, I'll have Cardio paged." She said and looked at the older woman "As a precaution." She looked up to Meredith as she rolled the gurney to the trauma room "Meredith you should.." she trailed off when Meredith nodded slowly.
