When it was time to get up in the morning, Bucky took care of the wolves while you were in the bathroom. You had tried to stay in his arms as long as possible, but your body wasn't having it. You knew he had to rush to get back to work for his mission, and you also knew that staying here was your mission. You didn't have to like it though. By the time Bucky had come back in and made sure that Cloud and Melody were settled down a bit, you had already finished getting dressed for the day. You had opted for one of his shirts again with a pair of jeans, and your red converse sneakers.
"I've got to go, doll" Bucky looked at his wrist and saw the time with a frown on his face.
"I'll see you this weekend" you closed the distance between the two of you. He wrapped his arms around you, enveloping you in a warm embrace.
"I have to keep reminding myself this is temporary" he whispered into the top of your head, giving you a quick kiss in your hair.
"As temporary as possible" you nodded.
"Promise me you'll be careful" Bucky whispered huskily.
"You promise me first, mission man" you countered quickly.
"I promise" he vowed.
"Then I do too," you giggled. Bucky grabbed you softly by the back of the neck, prompting you to look up and he pulled you in softly massaging his lips against yours to start. You quickly opened your lips to him and his tongue delved into your mouth and his tongue started dancing with yours . This kiss felt like another promise you were making to one another. Sealing it that you both would be safe, but a promise that the next time you would be together, you would take the time to fully be together if possible. His hand traveled up and down your back, as if memorizing every curve that he could. He pulled you impossibly closer so your entire body was up against him, and you could feel each contour of his muscles and beyond that. You hummed happily feeling his erection pressing up against you, every fiber of your being was crying out for him to take you regardless of the nausea that was plaguing you. It wasn't so much about the act itself, it was about the union between the two of you, and the bond that you shared.
Bucky slowly pulled back from the kiss and looked down at you with hooded eyes. He licked his lips, as though trying to make sure he got the taste of you completely. He hummed softly and rubbed his hands up either side of your arms.
"I love you, doll. I'll talk to you tonight on the phone" he leaned in for another brief kiss. He paused for a moment and went to your shoulder and pulled back the neck of your shirt and he placed a kiss on his normal marking spot, before a quick nip. "Be a good girl for me" he added, before stepping away.
"I love you, my James" you sighed heavily. You got down on your knees and Melody came over to press her forehead against yours before she licked you on the cheek. "I love you Melody, I'll see you both on the phone soon"
"I'll take care of the pup," Melody promised, stepping away while you got back up to your feet. Bucky grabbed the door handle, and you held yourself together as he smiled and let Melody out first before he slipped out the door. You waited until the door fully closed before you went over and latched it shut and the tears that had been threatening to fall started coming. It was like a waterfall all of the sudden, and you held in your whimper.
"It's okay to cry pup" Cloud tried reasoning with you as you blindly found your way to the bed. You sat down on the corner of the bed and hung your head. He pushed his head onto your lap and whined slightly as you whimpered again before you started crying your eyes out. "I'm still here" he reminded you and licked your hand as the tears started falling on top of his head. You knew this was temporary, but you hated being separated from Bucky. You had gotten so used to him being there every day. Saying goodbye twice in one week was more than your heart could handle. You felt like your heart was breaking, and you hoped Bucky was far enough away that he wouldn't feel it in the bond you had with him. You gave in and wrapped your arms around Cloud who whimpered in response but leaned into your hold."Sunshine, it's time to eat" Bruce was knocking on your door an hour later. You had barely finished crying and were holding a cold cloth to your face to bring down the swelling. Cloud gave a soft bark at the door, as if trying to tell Bruce that you were coming. You got to the door and pulled back on the latch before opening the door and Bruce gave a sad smile. "I had a feeling I'd find you like that" he admitted.
"How do you do this with Nat?" you demanded, heading back to sit on your bed with the compress back on your face.
"The same things you do with Bucky. We've just been at it a while" Bruce shrugged, coming in and sitting down beside you. He put an arm around your shoulders and pulled you in. You cuddled into him, and Cloud placed his head on your lap again, giving another soft whine. "Looks like Cloud is pretty worried about you too" Bruce reached out and pet Cloud on the head only to discover the fur was wet.
"He doesn't like being separated from Melody," you sniffed.
"You make a good pack" Bruce rubbed your back, and let you sit in silence for a few minutes.
"Okay, I'm ready" you pulled the cloth off of your face and blinked slowly looking at Cloud first.
"You're still swollen, pup" Cloud barked.
"Your face is still a bit red, are you sure you're ready to go?" Bruce asked worriedly.
"The three of us need to eat" you huffed a little. "This is as good as its going to get I suppose"
"It's going to get better" Bruce rubbed your back one more time for good measure before he moved away from you and stood up. You grabbed your purse and keys and followed Bruce out of the room with Cloud on your heels. You quickly locked up your room and Bruce led you down the winding hallways towards the cafeteria. When the three of you walked in you saw Tony had reserved an entire table already and was shooing away any agents that dared to come close to him. Both you and Bruce grabbed your meal, and Cloud's steak, before heading to the table.
"About time you showed up" Tony finally looked up from his phone. "I checked Bucky's GPS, he stopped at a diner on the way back to the compound this morning to grab breakfast" he gave you a small smile.
"Good, I forgot to remind him before he left" you gave a bit of a sniff, feeling a little stuffed up.
"Are you good to come into the lab today?" Tony looked a little worried.
"I'm good," you nodded quickly. "Just a rough morning" you started digging into your food.
"This is just temporary. I'm working on something with Fury so that we can work from home" Tony gave a soft sigh. "I miss my family too," he added with a faraway look in his eyes.
"We have to start on the serum today" Bruce reminded you and you gave a small nod.
"I'm a little nervous about it, to be honest. The last one didn't work out so well" you admitted.
"The three of us will be testing it first, not to worry. They are going to need it in the field. Or at least weapons to give them a leg up on this" Tony flipped his phone to show what he was working on. "I've started developing weapons, nothing that will kill them, but will help capture" he explained and pulled the screen into a 3D format. You watched as he started explaining his idea's excitedly, and he pulled you and Bruce in even more. You could see the benefit's, but understood the three of you had to work on the science of it. Tony was also working on a device that would be able to tell the team which bases had used the serum on their agents. The three of you sat and went over Tony's plans together until your food had all collectively gone cold. You made haste to finish your meal regardless and the four of you went back towards the lab.Over the next few weeks the three of you worked in tandem, when you weren't working on the serum you were working on the new weapons that Tony had started the base plans on. You started getting a new routine in, where Bruce or Tony would come get Cloud from your room to take him out in the morning, while Bruce normally joined you for the afternoon walk, and Tony would join for the evening walk. During the walks, you tried not to talk about work, but it was all any of you could think about. Tony's new weapons were going to be a game changer for the team, and the only problem was waiting for them to be built. The three of you had fine tuned down what would be needed to the last minute detail. The serum however, was taking its good old time to be concocted. The three of you knew that you wouldn't make it home for the weekends by the way things were going. Science takes time, and patience. Something you all felt like you were running out of. The hydra agent tried to make a break for it through the glass when he saw the new serum being actually created, but he didn't manage. The glass enclosure was thick enough that it didn't need to worry about too much. Fury had come in a few times during the weeks to check on your progress as a team, and seemed satisfied that you were moving ahead of the schedule he had figured you would be on.
When you had to tell Bucky that you wouldn't make it home for the weekends he seemed a little upset, but told you not to worry about it. He had a few extra missions that came up, and Nat would be with him on them. They had been working hard to try to bring in more prisoners. Bucky had mentioned something about Clint having to miss the weekend with his family as well, and you instantly felt badly that the time was being taken from them. You felt like if you worked faster the team wouldn't be in this situation. You were happy about one thing, Bucky still waited for you to go to bed. Some nights he looked more exhausted than others, but he still seemed determined to wait.
Saturday night, you went to the common room with Bruce and Tony again to have a movie night since you couldn't go home. You had received a text from Bucky that he was still on his mission and wouldn't be able to meet you to go to bed tonight, and your mood just instantly soured. It was the one thing that you had to look forward to after the long days in the lab. When you got to the common room, you saw Bruce didn't look happy either.
"Come on you two, it could be worse" Tony went to turn on the movie but both you and Bruce just glowered slightly.
"Come on Tony, we've been working at this for weeks. Seeing our families is what makes this separation bearable" Bruce finally broke his silence.
"Our data is working, they are finding more of the werewolf soldiers" Tony tried to bring up a positive.
"But they aren't managing to bring them in" you sulked slightly. "I miss being with my pack"
"We will be with them soon enough" Tony heaved a small sigh, knowing you were both right.
"It's been three weeks since we've been home, Tony," Bruce quipped quickly.
"We missed the pup's first howls too" you pouted. "I don't even know their names yet"
"We will make it home next weekend" Tony gave an exasperated sigh.
"You don't know that" Bruce shook his head, clearly he was missing home too.
"I'll make it happen," Tony promised. "Let's just try to focus on the movie," he pointed at the screen.
"I feel like I'd be more helpful on the missions" you finally said what you had been thinking the last few weeks. You looked at Tony who paused the tv and heaved a sigh.
"You know why you can't," he shook his head. "Hell, even Thor and Loki are on the daily missions, it's not easy on them and they are gods. I've been reading the mission reports. The harder we hit, they hit us harder, and they are using the serum on more hydra soldiers. They need the weapons, and they need the serum"
"He's right sunshine, you can't be out there" Bruce spoke softly.
You looked up and saw Deborah come into the room, but she smartly stayed away from you. She had gotten word somehow that you found out about her hitting on Bucky and your flame powers had frightened quite a few agents. You supposed she wasn't looking for a private performance. For that you were glad, you didn't feel like losing your temper again. But if she tried to talk to you again, all bets were off.
"My fire scares them" you spoke, your tone dangerous. It was really reflecting how tired you were of being in the lab and not being with your pack.
"I think it scares anyone who's smart enough to know how dangerous it can be" Tony unpaused the movie and put it back on to play again. You sat back and watched the screen half interested, but your eyes kept going back to your phone in your hand. You were hoping to get news on Bucky, but nothing was coming through.
"If it makes any difference, I want to go home too" Cloud spoke up suddenly. "My mate will be due to have her pups, and I don't want to miss it"
"That's not for another six or eight weeks Cloud, don't worry. I'll send you home in time" you raked your fingers through his fur. He was curled up beside you, and he hummed in appreciation of the small gesture.
"Melody's pups?" Bruce whispered and you nodded quickly. "I hope it doesn't take that long"
"We just need one success with the serum, and we can start working from home again" Tony spoke softly. "Just one"
