I was in my lab working on a few things when my dad walked in. The silence was a bit awkward until he broke it.
"I was in Italy for a business meeting and I uh brought you your favorite food from when we visited last time. The stuffed Ravioli with that special tomato sauce from Francesco's ." He said as he placed down the takeout container.
"What's your bad news this time?" I said knowing he was probably trying to soften the blow. I continued working on the mechanics of my project.
"I'm selling the tower." He said. I paused for a moment and just continued working. "Okay."
"Okay????? You're not mad?" My dad asked.
"Of course I'm mad but it's not like anything I say is going to make you not sell it so why even try."
"So that's it? No reaction? No huge argument? Nothing?"
"Is it going to change the fact that your selling the tower?"
"No but-"
"Then there's no point in even talking about it. Besides it was already on the news before you even decided to share this with me. So thanks for that." I said as I shrugged my shoulders.
"I'm going to India tomorrow I was hoping you would come."
"No thanks. I'm busy." I said continuing my work. "Pepper invited me to DC with her."
He sighed. He knew Pepper became like a second mother to me so he never crossed that line of telling me I can't go somewhere with her. He walked out of the room and I just sat silently for a minute thinking about how again I would have to move homes when I literally just got acclimated to this one.

[A FEW DAYS LATER IN DC]
"Thanks for bringing me along Pepper. Things with my dad have been, tense." I said playing with my salad as we were having lunch in a cafe.
"Don't worry about it. I worked for your dad for years so trust me I understand you might need a little break." She said making me chuckle.
"I just feel like he doesn't value my input and he is willing to jeopardize his relationship with the people closest to him as long as his ego of always being right isn't bruised."
"You're dad will come along, eventually." She said.
"How do you know?" I asked.
"The reason your upset with your father is same reason I'm upset with him."
I looked at her.
"Don't get me wrong, I love your dad, there's nothing I wouldn't do for him but it's true your dad hasn't been making the best choices lately. But it doesn't mean that I won't still be there for him or that I don't love him. Knowing your father for as long as I have he needs to put himself in the right headspace and usually it's when he's alone."
