Three and A Half Years Later

Joslyn's POV

"...Some believe Cleopatra and Anthony were soulmates. It was love at first sight. What other famous couples could you name that were soulmates?" Professor Fox asked.

I raised my hand.

"Ms. Lynch?"

"Romeo and Juliet," I said.

Some people snickered in the class. I looked around as my face grew hot with embarrassment.

"Good example, but I want real people. Anyone else?" Professor Fox asked.

"What about the Lynch's parents? Didn't they fall head over heels in love when they first saw each other?" Some girl in the back of the room asked.

Janis snorted.

"Here we go," Jamey mumbled.

"Was it head over heels in love or lust?" Janis muttered.

"Ms. Lynch, would you like to repeat that louder so everyone can hear?" Professor Fox asked.

"I said, was it love or lust?" Janis repeated.

"It was love." I shot back, looking at my sister.

"I doubt it," Janis said.

"Mom always said she walked in and saw him standing there and knew some outside force made her go into that record store that day," I argued.

"Mom also said she never loved any other man like Riker, and look where that got her. He killed her!" Janis exclaimed.

There were some gasps around the room.

"Dad didn't kill Mom!" Jamey chimed in. "Mom died from a heart attack. All the stress from her disease she had made her heart weak."

"Mom died from a heart attack," I said weakly.

"Or," Janis glared at her brother. "Dad asked Mom if he could go on tour again, and Mom's heart broke, and she had a heart attack."

"You don't know what you are talking about," Jamey said.

"Nobody knows except for Dad and Mom, and Dad won't tell us the truth, and Mom can't because she's dead!"

"Shut the fuck up, Janis!" Jamey spat.

"Hey! Hey! Hey! Everyone needs to calm down," Professor Fox eyed us weary. "Your homework is to write about love at first sight. Are people destined to be together forever? Does true love exist? Does everyone have a soulmate? Those are some questions you can think about when you write your paper. More directions are online. It's due by the next class. You are dismissed," Professor Fox said. "Lynchs, I'd like to see the three of you, please."

"Way to go, Janis," Jamey mumbled.

"Me? Joslyn started it," Janis accused.

"I did not!" I exclaimed.

"Ahem!" Professor Fox was glaring at us.

I picked up my bag and made my way down to her desk.

"You all know this is a writing class on Romantic Literature, right? We are going to discuss this stuff. The next time someone mentions your parents, it would be in your best interest to not participate in that conversation. The three of you have highjacked my class for the last time. Is that clear?"

"Yes," We mumbled.

"And Janis? I will not tolerate you making accusations in my class. You must let people speak their opinions and keep your mouth shut."
