Janis' POV
I grabbed a water from behind the bar and watched Joslyn flirt with Wesley.
My blood boiled.
I wanted to go over and claw my sister's eyes out, but that wouldn't be a good idea.
Besides, I had no claim on Wesley. He could talk, flirt, or hang out with anyone he wanted.
Wesley and I have been hanging out every single day since he came back to town.
It was different than before.
There was no kissing involved.
I was still attracted to him. He made my heart race and my hands sweat.
Sometimes I would be so deep in a fantasy about the two of us that I wouldn't hear what he said, and when he asked me if I heard him, I would get embarrassed.
A cute little grin would form on Wesley's lips, but he never said anything.
I'm unsure when our dynamics changed, but I prayed they'd return to how it used to be.
I missed kissing him. My lips sometimes ached to feel his lips on mine again.
I wasn't sure how to return, so we kept moving forward.
I prayed that he would look at me one day and realize that I am everything he always wanted and we would be together forever.
That sounds so cliche, even in my head.
When did I become such a sap?
How did I get so attached to a guy?
My old professor would love this if she saw me now.
I finished college last year. I was looking for a teaching job and still driving Uber to make ends meet.
"Please don't ever leave me alone with your sister again," Wesley said, approaching me.
I grinned.
"Why?"
He shook his head.
"She is a force I'd rather not have to go against."
I laughed. "Are you going to play tonight?"
"I'm not sure. Rocky and I have been working on some stuff, but it isn't quite done."
I nodded.
I'd never seen Wesley perform.
"I'm going to run over to the pool house and check on Cooper," I said.
Wesley nodded. "I'll come with you."
"You don't have to," I said.
"I know," Wesley said and fell into step with me.
We walked silently over to the house, and I unlocked the door.
Cooper came bouncing across the room to greet us.
I couldn't help but smile.
Cooper was a terrific dog. He made me laugh all the time.
It might sound silly, but Cooper is my best friend. He comforts me, listens to me, and is a great cuddler. I don't know what I'd do without that dog.
"Janis?"
I blinked and looked over at Wesley.
He smiled. "Did you hear a word I said?"
My cheeks grew hot. "No, sorry, I was thinking about Cooper."
Wesley nodded as the dog wiggled around while I scratched his shoulders.
