Chapter 40 - Plans Change

Janis POV

I placed my shoes on top of my clothes in the suitcase and closed it, zipping it shut.

Cooper sat there and looked at me.

"Don't look at me like that! I'll be gone for a few days. Rocky and Ross will take good care of you!" I told him.

Cooper wagged his tail.

"I'll be back before you know it," I said, going to my dog and scratching his head.

My back pocket buzzed, and I grabbed my phone out of it.

Smiling, I clicked it on.

"Hello?"

"Hi, how are you?" Wesley asked.

"Good, how are you?"

"Good, how was your day?" he asked.

"Okay, I'm all packed, although Cooper thinks I'm forgetting him."

My eyes met Cooper's large brown puppy eyes.

"You won't fit in my bag, Coop."

Wesley laughed.

"Next time, he can come with us."

"Next time? I hope we go someplace better than Denver," I said, sitting on my bed.

"Better than Denver? Denver is pretty nice," Wesley argued.

"And cold," I added.

"It's a little chillier than L.A. How's your family?"

"Okay, I guess," I said. "I spent the afternoon with Molly while Riker did some errands. She is such a happy baby. It sucks that Joslyn will miss three months of her life, but at least she's a baby and won't remember."

"Did Joslyn get settled into rehab?" Wesley asked.

"I guess so, we aren't allowed to visit or call her, and she can't contact us either," I explained.

"That's for her own good. It'll change in a month or so," Wesley said.

"I hope so," I said.

"How's Riker and Jamey?"

"Riker is taking it in strides. He's a little overwhelmed, but everything happened so fast I'm sure he's in shock."

"And Jamey?"

"I don't know, I haven't talked to Jamey, and he didn't show up at the courthouse yesterday. I hope he's okay," I said.

"Did you hear from the school about the teaching position?"

"No, I haven't. I guess it didn't go as well as I thought."

"The perfect job will come along for you."

"What have you been doing?" I asked.

"I've been walking around checking out places I want to take you when you get here," He said.

I laughed.

"If you already went, you won't want to go again."

"I haven't gone to them. I've just walked by them and checked them out."

"That's crazy! Why don't you go do something fun?"

"I'm waiting for you," Wesley said.

"Wesley, you have been there for two days! Go do something fun, and you can tell me all about it when I get there tomorrow."

"I have more fun when I'm with you."

My stomach felt funny. Wesley has that effect on me.

I smiled, feeling my face grow hot, and thankful we were on the phone.
