Janis' POV
One Month Later
I stood outside Wesley's apartment door. I've been here so many times, yet this time, I felt nervous, like I was doing something wrong.
In a way, I was. Riker thought I was doing everything correctly. Wesley will disagree. I was nervous. I didn't want to have this conversation with him, but I needed to.
I lifted my hand to knock, and the door opened magically.
Wesley stood in front of me. His sexy mouth hung open in surprise.
"Janis? I was going to get some food," he said.
I nodded, not meeting his eyes.
"Do you want to come in? Or ride along? I was going to get Chinese, but we can get something else if you want," He offered.
"We need to talk," I said quietly.
"Oh. Sure, come on in," Wesley said, stepping aside.
I hesitated momentarily, then took a deep breath and stepped in.
The apartment looked the same but different.
Boxes stacked against the wall with Wesley's belongings. Someone cleared off the coffee table, and two suitcases sat by the hall to the bedroom. It was hard to believe I hadn't been here in a month. It felt like an eternity.
"Are you all packed?" I asked.
"For the most part, what about you?" He asked.
I didn't answer him.
"How's Riker?" Wesley asked.
I shrugged.
How should one be after burying his daughter? Riker was usually quiet. The only time I saw him smile was when he was with Molly. That little girl could make anyone smile. She was the glue that held this family together. Whenever I thought I would lose my mind, Molly would come to me with those big blue eyes and say, "Nis?"
That's what she called me, Nis. Molly called everyone by the last part of their names. It was cute. The only name she pronounced was Ross. Ross claimed it was because he was her favorite. Of course, if I gave her chocolate every time I saw her, I'd be her favorite.
I smiled at the thought of Molly.
She was something else. A mixture of Joslyn, my Mom, and everyone else rolled up into one. She was the sweetest little girl, so kind and caring. Sometimes, she took better care of us than we did of her.
I'd been staying at Riker's since Joslyn's death.
Uncle Zack went home with Aunt Sabrina that day. Somehow, we got through the few days before the funeral, and all hell broke loose.
Christopher showed up at the cemetery. I knew he would. He was red-eyed and a blubbering idiot, and I'm sure a little high on something.
Jamey went to approach him, but Stephanie held him back.
There was a time and a place, and the cemetery wasn't it.
Christopher stood by his family and grieved the loss of his cousin. Uncle Tristan kept a close eye on him.
After the service, we went back to Riker's house. Jamey was worried because he didn't think Chris would show up, but he did. Twenty minutes later, the police arrested Christopher with a slew of charges. He was currently in jail awaiting trial.
I thought I'd feel better after they arrested Christopher, but I didn't.
"Janis?" Wesley asked.
I looked at him. He was so handsome. His strawberry blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail. His gorgeous blue eyes filled with so many emotions.
