IT IS FRIDAY AFTERNOON. Eschewal sits at his desk with stress lines etched across his forehead. He has spent half his wages buying new clothes and attending every rave he could get to, and still no sign of the girl in the park.
He looks up from his screen. Both of his eyes are puffy, as if he had been crying. He had not, but behind his eyes, deep within his subconscious, doubt had begun chipping away at the persistence it takes to keep looking for the girl. A smile stretches across his face as desire consumes him. It is overwhelming; it will not let him stop. He has to find her. He still feels she will be his wife and provide him with the happiness he has longed for all his life.
He closes his eyes. His latest dream of him and her sailing towards the sun as they exchange vows emerges clear in his mind, crisp and indestructible. He opens his eyes and stares ahead.
The voice of one of his colleagues snaps him out of his trance. "I've tried it already. No matter how long you stare at it, it won't go any faster."
Eschewal looks toward his colleague and laughs; now, he wishes the time would tick faster so he could leave the office and get to the circuit of wine bars and clubs to fulfill his dream.
This thought brings Deuce to mind. He wishes he had someone else to attend raves with because it is getting harder and harder to pretend to be a player and explain why he is not approaching and talking to any girls. Also, because Deuce always makes his girls bring a friend for him, this causes Eschewal to constantly find ways of making the friends, not like him. Up to now, he has succeeded in not sleeping with any friends. However, tension is brewing because Deuce is beginning to feel used. Eschewal senses it but has to stick to his plan. He will not sleep with anyone because he wants to be fresh when he finds his princess. He thinks he will be a second-time virgin once he has sex with his princess on their honeymoon night.
He smiles and looks up at the clock. The time reads five past five; fifty-five minutes left. He huffs and decides to call Deuce.
Deuce answers the call.
Eschewal leans back on his chair. "Yes, sir, what's going on? Yeah, but what's going on tonight?"
