WITH STEADY STEPS, ESCHEWAL walks to the baggage claim. He carries a medium-sized brown bag strapped to his back, filled with everything he will need for his trip.
He reaches the hallway of the baggage claim. It is full of people waiting and dragging off their suitcases onto their trolleys.
He looks up at the monitor hanging from the ceiling, which tells him which carousel has his luggage. He pads over to carousel two, his heart racing a bit too much. He does not know it, but eyes behind walls are watching his every movement.
He reaches the carousel. He stands relaxed, saying to himself, "It's gonna be all good, bruv. It's all good."
Forty-five minutes later, Eschewal still stands at carousel two. He spots his suitcase. His heart rate falls, and a smile appears.
He looks around the half-empty hall and spots a few customs officers hovering.
He knows they are there for him.
With relaxed ease, he drags the suitcase from the carousel and plops it on the trolley. He looks left, then right, then makes his way to the airport exit.
