TO ESCHEWAL, IT FEELS like he is moving in slow motion as he steps up to the intercom bell. He pulls his baseball cap further down his face, takes a quick look at either side of him, and presses the bell.
A voice answers in a seductive tone, "Hello..."
"Yeah, hello, I just spoke to you on the phone."
Errrr, the door is buzzed open. He walks through it with his heart thumping in his chest. Before he can make his way up, a head pops around the corner from atop the stairs.
"Hello, darling, are you here for Flat 14?"
"Yeah, yeah," says Eschewal as he climbs the stairs. He reaches the door; the t-girl's eyebrows raise as if stunned to see a person like Eschewal visiting.
"You here to see me?" asks the t-girl while looking behind Eschewal to see if he has planned to come and do a robbery.
"Yeah, aren't you going to let me in?"
The t-girl creaks open the door. Eyes darting from right to left, the t-girl moves back.
Eschewal almost closes his eyes as he steps into the hallway. As he moves down it, his eyes scan the carpet-decorated walls. He passes weird, expensive-looking paintings. Before he reaches the bedroom, he picks up his image in the gold-plated wall mirror, and for a split second, the image he sees of himself he does not recognize.
