ESCHEWAL DASHES TO HIS car. His phone rings. He thinks it might be Kaya calling him with a change of mind. His heart feels like it shoots up to his throat as Reasha's name flashes on the screen. He had not heard from her for about two months and assumed she had gotten the message. He shakes his head, wondering what reason he could give her why he has not called since they met last.

He clicks open his car door and answers the call, "Yeah, hello," he says with an even tone.

"Hi stranger," replies Reasha, as if it was just the other day they spoke. "What's up? Why haven't I heard from you?"

He swallows hard and ponders, 'Dare I tell her that because her feet smelt, I never want to link her on a sexual or romantic level again?' He clears his throat. "Nah, wait there, I'm sure you said you would give me a call, and like, I've been waiting ever since."

She wrinkles her nose. "I don't remember saying that, and even if I did say that, couldn't you call and find out why I hadn't called?"

He opens his car door and says, "Boy, to tell you the truth, because you didn't call, I thought you were giving me a sign that you weren't interested."

She raises her eyebrows and says, "Of course, I'm interested in you." She pauses, then continues, "Are you interested in me?"

He closes his eyes, swings his car door open, and then shuts it. Time to be honest. He leans on the car roof. "Yeah, man, you're a nice girl, man."

She clears her throat. "Yeah, but?"

"Nah, no buts. You're a nice girl, innit." He opens his car door. "But listen, can we talk about this later because I'm in a rush to get somewhere."

She almost sucks her teeth. "Yeah, okay."

"Alright, I'll call you later."

He ends the call with no intention of ever calling her back, hoping, this time, she gets the message.

He jumps in the car and sucks his teeth, then shakes his head. He thinks, 'Why couldn't I just be honest? People don't want honesty.'

He sticks the key into the ignition and speeds off, hoping that Kaya is still waiting at the bus stop.
