PEACHY SITS IN HER bedroom alone, hoping Eschewal gets the message and does not call back. She decides to call Deuce to ask if they can meet up. He lies and tells her he will call her back in five minutes.
Ten minutes pass, and with anxiety etched across her face, she is about to call him back when a withheld number flashes up on her screen. Without thinking, she answers, expecting to hear the voice of Deuce. Instead, she hears the voice of Eschewal.
The reality of what she has been doing, avoiding his call, hits Eschewal between his chest plates and makes him feel weak.
He controls his rage, and in a smooth tone, he says, "Are we still linking up?"
Peachy clears her throat and feels like all the blood in her body has drained to her legs as she prepares to lie. "Oh, I'm so sorry, babes, something has come up, so I can't make it."
He grits his teeth as a lump appears in his throat. He replies, "So you couldn't call from before and let me know?"
She slips out of the question, "Nah, because I just found out now, innit."
He once again calms the rage from exploding over her lies and says, as firmly as a president declaring war: "This thing that has come up, exactly what is it?"
"It's just something, innit," she hesitates, then adds, "I just got to do something."
With the first trace of anger in his voice, he retorts, "That's what I want to know. What have you got to do?"
She stays silent as her mind goes blank from trying to make up a good enough reason.
"Oi, are you listening?"
She remains silent.
This makes his voice rise higher with anger; he cannot control his emotion. "That's why I know you're an idiot; you can't even answer, man."
He grips the phone. His body shaking with anger, he wants to curse her out and say, "Oi, when I see you, I'm gonna lick you over and buss-up your face. Respect something, you fucking butters." But the thought disappears as he knows that thug inside him died long ago.
He ends the call, throws his phone on the table, and then sits down. The anger hasn't entirely left his body when his phone rings. He jumps up, thinking its Peachy. Instead, it is Deuce inviting him to a rave.
Eschewal takes a moment to decide. The repetitiveness of going out to raves and events so that he could see the girl in the park has taken its toll on him. Before, he had a purpose. Now it just seems there is no need, but reluctantly he agrees. After all, he is spruced up, and at least now he has somewhere to go.
