Elliot's POV

I have on my headphones, jamming out to one of my favorite bands. It's a funky alternative band. I like them a lot, even though their band is rather new. I'm listening to the song 'I'm A Slut, You Rang?'. It's one of my favorite tracks from their latest album. It also blocks out the whole world, all of the noise. The door to my office opens. The shadow darkens my screen. I look up to see Jack standing over me. I pause my music and stare at him.

"What do you want?" I ask.

"We have a case." Jack hums.

"Another murder?" I wonder.

"I'd rather not tell you... I know you have a weak stomach." He replies.

"Come on, you know that I can make you tell me." I retort.

"I don't want you throwing up on me." Jack scoffs.

I grab his wrist and stare into his eyes. I can see the reflection of my eyes glowing in his irises. You see, my irises are split into two different colors, half brown and half yellow. Not that anyone else can tell, I wear brown contacts. I have magical powers, I can read people's minds, but I have to touch them to make my powers work. It makes anyone's secrets or thoughts known to me. As I stare at him, my eyes narrow. I need to focus on concentrating on his thoughts only.

'I can't believe that I had to see that, that poor lady had her face melted by acid. The way her face was dripping off-' Jack's thoughts are echoing into my head.

Repulsed, I removed my hand from him. Jack raises an eyebrow at me as I cover my mouth, feeling nauseous as I begin to feel vomit creeping up my throat. He gives me an 'I Told You So' look and goes to leave.

"Well, if you have any technology that you need someone to look at, you know where to bring it," I said softly.

"I will see you then, Kiddo," Jack responds, leaving the room.

That was disgusting. Ew. I wish that I didn't have to picture it in my head. At least I don't have to actually see it... I don't have to go to the autopsy.

I put my headphones back on. The sign finishes playing and the next song comes on, 'Burnt Candle'. My mind starts to wander, thankfully. I'm sure that you're all wondering, 'Elliot, why can you read minds? How did that happen?' and I think an explanation is in order. At the boarding school that I attended, the science teachers were way too into experiments and experimental. One of the kids that got experimented on was me. Someone slipped some sort of drug into my food. That drug gave me the ability to read people's minds. I continue to listen to music, doing a showcase of Chipped Tooth's setlist.

A knock comes at the door. I don't hear it. Another knock comes, it's fiercer, so loud that I can hear it through my headphones. I turn off my music and spin my chair towards the door. The knocking continues. I begrudgingly get up and open the door. Carmen smiles at me.

"Hello, Carmen." I greet.

"Hey, Elliot." She replies.

"Did you need something for the case?" I query.

"About the case, it's finished. You can go home now." Carmen informs.

"Really? It's only been- I checked my watch, realizing that I've been sitting at my desk for hours -a long time... you didn't even send me anything."

"Yes. It was a cutthroat case. We went to go talk to the victim's boyfriend and he immediately confessed. There was an argument while she was cleaning the kitchen with an acidic cleaner and he just threw it at her in a rage... You probably didn't want to see it anyway." She explains.

"I didn't... but I saw it anyway after I read Jack's mind," I murmur.

"Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to read people's minds when they insist you not to." Carmen retorts.

"I know, you don't have to tell me twice, but sometimes curiosity gets the best of me." I snap back.

Carmen rolls her eyes and walks off. I duck back into the room and gather my things. I sling my bag around my shoulders and head out, headphones back on and music blaring. I walk the short distance from the Bureau Headquarters to my little apartment. There was a car that I recognized in the parking garage. Is that Mom's car? I walk through the garage and head up to my floor. Waiting for me was Mom at my door. She glanced up from her phone and smiled at me. My mother comes over and squeezes me in a hug.

"Hello, Elliot, love! How are you?" Mom questions.

"I'm doing well, how are you, Mom? What are you doing here?" I ask, unlocking the door with my key.

"I'm doing okay. I missed you, so I wanted to see you." She replies.

"Come in! I am going to make some tea and probably fix dinner, so you can sit on the couch and we can talk." I reply, smiling.

"You haven't eaten yet? I'll let you eat, I want you to take care of yourself." My Mother returns.

I led her inside. Mom sits on the couch, making herself comfortable. She twirls one of her multi-colored strands of hair. I walk into the kitchen and put a kettle of hot water on. I place the teabag in it too and then join her in the living room.

"Now since we're alone, I have to ask, how are your new powers treating you?" She questions.

"They're fine. I mean, sometimes they get annoying or I regret using it sometimes, but it's alright." I answer.

"But can you focus? You can concentrate on controlling the power, right?" Mom hums.

I nod. "It's based on touch, I can control it. It's taken a while to learn how to focus while using it, but I've learned."

"Good. Your sisters were asking and now I can happily report back that you're alright." She beams.

"How is Dad? Is he doing okay?" I inquire.

"Your Dad is working! Just doing his thing." My mother said.

The tea kettle cries. I hurry off to the kitchen and get to the tea kettle. I pour two cups of tea and then carry them back to the room. Mom thanks me for the tea and I sip at it. I kick my feet back and then relax. Mom and I use the time that we drink the tea to talk and catch up. I accidentally touch my Mom's hand and her echoey thoughts teleport into my head.

'I know he's doing something really important at work, but it really hurts me that he has to live so far away... I love my darling Son so much. I know that you're reading my thoughts right now but at least now you know that it's going to be very hard for me to leave.'

"Mom... you're so mushy and lovey-dovey," I whisper.

"I know, but you're my only son, of course, I love you very much." She replies.

"You can't stay here forever though, Mom." I scoff.

My mother reaches a hand out and messes with my hair. I stifle a laugh and hug her. She hugs back, taking the empty cup from my hand and placing it on the coffee table. The two of us stay in the embrace and she pulls away after a while. Mom kisses me on the head and then she stands up, saying that Dad bought her a roundabout ticket. I wave to her as she leaves my apartment. I can't believe that she came to visit me. I have powers, I should have seen that coming! I guess next I need to be able to tell the future!
