after the conversation with kassie i head to the library. the conversation has sparked another conversation i had with my dad a long time ago about history. there has to be an answer to these questions somewhere. to my surprise though the more i try and find out about the crystal core the less i have to find. the alasians believe that the crystal core is what powers alasia but they never talk about it being a physical object like the creatures. and if it is a physical object where is it? and if the crystal holders are hurting it, how are they?

"hey," it's kassie. i didn't even realize she had followed me here.

"hey," she smiles.

"last year, when we were in the lake, you talked to the griffies, didn't you?" i ask slowly. she freezes.

"in passing," she continues.

"the menta walked you to your crystal during the final," i press on.

"yes," she sounds so small.

"so why haven't you talked about any of this before? why weren't you trying to talk to them?" it doesn't make sense.

"was someone telling you not to?" i continue pensively. she blinks at me and blanches a spotty red. i sigh and put a hand around her shoulder.

"it's okay, you don't have to tell me yet. just. find someone, okay?" i conclude. she gives me those eyes she used to give me last year. last year when we almost dated. when this kind soul wanted my company, more so i wanted hers. i smile down at her. she smiles up at me sadly. we both know we can't be together. there's too much going on to get swept away by feelings. there's peoples' lives at stake here.

"so why have you come to the library?" i change the subject.

"i wanted to find out more about the creatures, find a way to make peace. there has to be," she sounds so hopeful when she says this but i'm not so sure.

why was someone trying to keep her from talking to the creatures? the only reason they'd do that is if they had something to hide? so what is it they're hiding?

i can't help but think of the picture of the laughing faces from the cabin. the blood on the ground. and that man that killed me when i tried to go alone. what happened there? does it have to do with the creatures? i laugh at the thought. it's so far fetched.

no one has talked to the creatures since the war began. no one but kassie has talked to the creatures since the war began. so why her of all people? ugh. this is giving me a head ache and i can't even find what i need. finally i decide to call it a night and make my way back to my room.

i'm almost to my hall when i run into tigris and her squad.

i gulp.

"so, you grabbed the crystal, how'd you do it?" she snarls.

i smile back.

"if you'll excuse me i need to go to bed," i brush past her. she grabs my wrist.

"i've got my eyes on you," she hisses.
